I wish we could have a garden, but the heat and the bugs here are twin forces difficult to vanquish. And I like the idea of gardening, but not the actual bending and weeding and getting dirty part. :/ But I want plants! I want flowers and vegetables! Not just ficus and ivy!
We talk about it off and on. It would be an investment, which, given recent issues, probably can't happen; but maybe the houseplants could work. We had an aerogarden several years ago and I enjoyed that, but then there was the cleaning-out phase. It introduced me to the wonderful world of fresh basil, though. I'm the only one who enjoys fresh basil or, possibly, any basil, in the house. :/
Southern houses are designed not to let any direct sunlight into the rooms, to keep the heat from getting bad, so any "put it in a sunny window to let it grow" advice just falls flat. Plants here have to be happy with partial shade, indirect light, or artificial light, which severely limits the options (and I want color, not just greenery...).
At work I have some kind of ivy that thrives under once a week watering, the artificial light and whatever sunlight leaks through the nearby windows. Which is very nice, and I love that. But at home I have a feeling I'd have to grow mushrooms inside.
You should just get a couple of shade-tolerant houseplants! You'll probably feel encouraged if you start somewhere. African violets maybe? And maybe dust off the aerogarden.

Have you thought about investing in a raised bed (less bending), or at least getting a few flowering houseplants for yourself?
(And hi, Samwise!)
