Doctor Who: Casting News - Rant against the Fanwank

Jul 04, 2007 21:32

I'll produce my review of the last episode soon but right now I'm incensed enough to comment on the casting news and people's reactions.

From what I see, people seem to be annoyed because they don't find Catherine Tate funny. So what? I don't find her funny either but it's not her skills as a comedienne that are the issue here. I've seen her in serious acting roles and you know, she's not half bad. And I thought she made a fantastic companion in the Christmas Special. Because frankly, the Doctor needs someone like that - a companion who doesn't think he's God's gift to Earth, who will challenge him, who isn't in love with him. She's really seen his darkness and she's already refused him once. All these things point to a stronger companion who has the balls to question him, call him on his occasional crap.

Plus, she was refreshingly different in the way she didn't care about all the stuff going on in the world, she's delightfully self-centred and human in that way and I think it's going to make a big difference and add a different slant to the show.

As for the news that Martha will be in Torchwood and then back on Who, I think that's great too. I haven't always liked Martha's character but for the most part I liked her, and my respect for her grew immensely as she made the choice to leave and get over the Doctor. And I hope she does, I felt it to be the thing that weakened her character most, making her too much of a comparison to Rose, even though I can completely understand how it would be a natural reaction.

So bring on Series 4/30, let's just forget the wank and hope for a continuing run of well-written episodes that entertain us all, keep us on the edge of our seats in suspense and have us laughing. (And as a geek I would personally like the lovely old school references to continue too, but that's not such an important aspect.)

I like Doctor Who, the show. It has long been a well-written institution of our country and long may it remain. The storylines, the TARDIS and the Doctor, and the whole universe it creates are amazing and it's a shame fandom has to forget that to wank over a few castings. Give it a chance, everyone worries about every casting when it's announced and I have always been proven wrong in my opinions. Let's keep our faith in the crew who make it so fantastic.
