I think the shameful thing is that this law was ever necessary. The Act was a response to the systematic disenfrachisment of minorities, mostly black Americans, in certain areas, mostly in the South. While a lot has changed in the 40+ years since this thing was first passed, I think a lot in politics hasn't changed. Specifically, those in power will do their darndest to rig elections so that they can remain in power. See the gerrymandering spearheaded by Tom DeLay and his cronies in Texas. If it were still legal to have a literacy test or some stupid crap like that, I'm sure there would be plenty of politicians willing to use them to their advantage. So this law is renewed to fix that ( ... )
