I actively don't know if those statements are true.
Also there may be things to do that are better than those things.
If youre going to buy meat it may as well be organic, it'll probably taste better. If youre going to buy a car it may as well be electric because it causes less harm. Though you still have to make hte electricity somehow,
Personally I'm inclined to agree with the first statement and disagree with the second. But both statements could be regarded as making excuses for a certain kind of selfish behaviour (eating meat, buying cars).
(Clearly there are any number of good reasons for being vegetarian, including ethical reasons, even if you accept the first argument.)
unfortunately public transport isnt a saint either, buses and the like are often using inefficient older engines and have to run empty during the day to keep the service at a level approaching usable. Its he sort of thing that independent numbers would help a lot on... but will never exist because there is so much auto industry riding on the back of them
