Le Sigh

Have you ever had one of those days where you just really start to hate your country?  Today is one of those days for me, for two distinct reasons: Quartziste, AZ and the Bachmanns.  Again, if this isn't your cup of tea, feel free to ignore this post.  For those reading further, this post is a little video-heavy.

So for those of you who haven't heard, there's been quite a bug stink in the little town of Quartsite, Arizona as of late.  It all started with a town council meeting that went a little something like this:

And to understand better what the hell just happened in that video, check out this article.  Yes, that IS the mayor of the town telling the council member that said councilman is in violation of the mayor's rules of order.  And yes, the mayor IS in charge of council meetings and such.  Yeah.  I think that's enough said on that.  If you want more info, or want to know how to get involved or spread the word, check out this Facebook page.

And just when I thought it couldn't get worse, I see this lovely video about the Bachmanns:

Now, I knew that the Marcus Bachmann engaged in "pray away the gay" counselling.  What I didn't realize was that he lied about it.  Now, aside from the simple fact that we don't really want to elect acknowledged liars, I have to ask: if he really believes in his stand on homosexuality and in his therapies, why the hell would he need to lie about it?  Really?

But then I started reading the comments on the thread I found that video, and there was another link, to this video (which I don't know how to embed from msnbc's site, so just click the link).  And I wondered when on Earth it became ok to throw around slavery as a friggin' trope, like large ham.  This isn't a joke, dammit, and it's certainly nothing like Medicaid in any way.  My God, woman, what the hell is wrong with your tiny ostrich brain?  But what should i expect from a woman who doesn't even know when slavery was eliminated from this country?  Seriously, see for yourselves here (link again, since embed code wasn't working right).

For those who didn't study or don't remember American history, the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, and only covered 10 states that were still separate from Union control.  There are a number of states, counties, and cities that were either under Union control completely or working on becoming so, that were specifically exempted from the proclamation.  I won't even go into the issues of legality it brought up, because that's mostly not relevant, but the point is that it was almost 100 years after the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution before slavery was fully and completely abolished from this country.  If Bachmann can't even be bothered to study this country's history, are we really willing to trust her with our future?  F*** NO!

Aaaaanyway, I'm off to bed.  Gonna cuddle with the boyfriend and remember that not everyone in this country is either a jackass or a looney or both.

the country gone mad, the bachmann, quartsite
