So, I'm watching SPN on my own special little timeline, dictated mostly by Bittorrent speeds and whenever I really need to procrastinate on my term essays (and when they drag my butt into work). So, tonight was Faith

I actually liked the level of angst we had going on. I thought it was good and appropriate. It's iceberg-angst - we only see a little bit, but there's nine-tenths more going on under the surface. One of my big bitches with Sam is that he vocalises his angst too much, constantly, but this ep they handled it perfectly. They showed us the angst, rather than beating us over the head with it. I felt Sam's frantic desperation about Dean's death, and I felt Dean's stoic acceptance and then his anguish over the situation. (Pants OFF to both actors for great turns in this ep.)
I'm totally with you, by the way, on Sam's reliance on Dean. Standing on Dean's metaphorical shoulders, Sam is a giant. Take him away, and he's lost. He doesn't have to be right there, but he has to be somewhere. A world with Dean in it is the only thing Sam knows.
I did, however, think the way they used the song was awesome. I loved that sequence. (I hate their generic violins-of-meaningful-dialogue background music, though.) I'll grant you, it wasn't a big, pivotal,

Upon reflection, I think you've got it closer to right than I do. This was my initial gut-reaction, and I've already admitted to having more emo-Sam-like tendancies than is strictly healthy ;) And if the ep had showed them wallowing in angst, then I'd be complaining about that. I'm hard to please. *g*
I have to disagree with you about the song, however. Yeah, it was slick and clever, but that's not where I wanted it. I wanted pivotal, significant, important. That's probably a function of my own life circumstances, and the fact that I am rather emotionally invested in the song, as well as simply liking it. Oh well. We can't see eye-to-eye on everything, and I think most of the rest of fandom's going with you on this one :)
