Vienna was not really part of the plan, but I ended up here on a layover, awaiting a train to Budapest tomorrow morning. Arrived after midnight and just got back from a long walk around: maybe my blood is just boiling from all the sugar I've eaten (literally had naught else today but 1.33 apples and a bu-uu-nch of candy), maybe it's the random ( Read more... )

The Hundertwasserhaus in the 3. Bezirk is really cool. If you've got a free evening, you could try to get a standing room ticket for the Staatsoper; tonight is Tchaikovsky Anna Karenina and it only costs 4 Euros. Standing tickets are all sold on the day, and people queue for 3-4 hours to get the best spot, but you might easily get one by turning up an hour before.

I look at that picture and I hear "Good heavens, Miss Sakamoto! You're beautiful!" in my head.

I really need to go back to Vienna sometime, if only to revisit the apartments of Princess Sissi. Such a fascinating and bizarre woman with an equally bizarre death.

Also great to do while there: there's a cinema that shows 'The Third Man' (film noir with Orson Welles if you haven't seen it) every week. The film is set in Vienna and you can go on a tour to see all the places it filmed, including the sewers under the streets.

Are you kidding me? That's amazing! That is my favourite film of all time - and to actually see it ~in~ Vienna - yowza.

Question: Is there anywhere in the city to hear zither music?

In Budapest, visit Central Market (Kozponti Vasarcsarnok) where you will every other stall seems to sell delectable strudels. They are filled with cherries, apples, cheese, and (my favorite) poppy seeds. And dusted with sugar. Also had some tasty sweet dumplings (at dinner). I have no idea what they were called. But, I do remember the taste.
