my place in the old world

I may have slept too long on composing this entry: my Euro vacation is over and I'm back in Albuquerque; so much has happened between then/there and now/here that I feel like I'm trying to write about the distant past rather than two weeks ago! Oh well, I'll do my best to make it interesting even if it's not quite fresh. This entry is about ( Read more... )

This brought back memories of studying in Romania! Markeds were just like you described and not to mention the not paying bus fares!

LIke the snazzy things you got though. Especially the pig thingy something.

A note on Budapestian architecture: It's the law that 20 percent of the budget for anyone owning a building must be set aside for external decoration. Results in some BEAUTIFUL stuff. I lived there last year, what a city...everything you said is pretty said on. Oh, and no one ever checks tickets on buszes or trams during the day, ever, but most people probably carry some kind of monthly pass that doesn't require validation.

Interesting. Reminds me of a similar policy in Korea: construction companies there must dedicate a tiny fraction of their budgets to beautifying their building sites. The result is hilarious: cheerful, incongruous little displays of, like, potted flowers and fake trees around otherwise normal-looking construction zones.

I wonder what would happen if the United States implemented a policy like Hungary's. To what heights of architectural loveliness would all these insidious new Walgreens soar?

1% of funding for corporate buildings have to be for art I believe. That usually means a giant abstract hunk of metal or stone, shiny and/or red.

Interesting perfumes. Did you buy any of those? The Charnel No.5, perhaps?

Nice silver figa, but beware wearing it-
unless you're trying to get preggers!
What is the deal with the pig and the egg?
I'm so curious! Good trinkets, and
haha- CHARNEL! I want it just for the box.
Is that Chanel for goths?
I want to go to Hungary!
