Comics "Can we start a EFlj Comics discussion if it does not exist now?"

May 01, 2016 15:53

The lovely Nmcil posted this on the ShoutBox and so here it it.

Feel free to start conversations about all things Buffy comics (all varieties) here. This can include questions from those not reading but wanting to know the "official" direction for all our beloved characters.

*hugs*

How was Spike's return to Buffy's life handled? Did she have prior knowledge that he was "back" before actually laying eyes on him?

I loved, loved, loved his reaction in After Life when she came down the stairs and he realized she was alive, but I get the feeling his return wasn't handled in quite the same way as far as her reaction. :) Was she pissed at him, happy, a little of both? Did they play it off like her feelings for him had cooled at all?

Did he explain why he stayed away?

From the bits I read it was as if he'd not gone anywhere or died (and she had never said the ILY). Basically it wasn't really fully addressed. He showed up in his bug spaceship around the time for Buffy and Angel/Twilight to have space sex. He told them how to stop Twilight: (from Wiki) "Spike's information leads them to source both of magic and of Twilight's power, a mystical "seed" buried beneath Sunnydale. Giles plans to destroy it, but Twilight possesses Angel and compels him to kill Giles by snapping his neck. Distraught, Buffy smashes the seed herself. Twilight is stopped but magic is also removed from the universe. " In #36 Last Gleaming part 1 after Spike has let them all on his bug ship Buffy says, "One, thanks for saving us from the ubervamps, that was crazy studly and sorry I haven't been in touch, but as you can see I'm somehow leading an army" Spike replies, "You're Wel..." She interrupts with "Two what do you know and how can you help? No jokes. No snark. No British slang that just means something Dirty ( ... )

In the Bryan Lynch written "Spike" series (when IDW still had the rights to Angel and by default Spike) Willow came to LA to help Spike get rid of a nasty piece of work called John who it turned out was Drusilla's lover. I can't recall the total story, but relevant to your question, just before Willow leaves she tells Spike that Buffy knows he is alive she "kicked down doors, because she had to know" (that's not verbatim - I'd need to go back). I'm also sure Spike deflects wanting to see Buffy with a "Not here, not now" kind of statement. It wasn't much, but Spuffies are easy to please :-)

I'd like to think Lynch was going to go into all of this a lot more, but Joss & co abruptly pulled IDW's rights to the characters and this particular series became abbreviated. But, apparently Joss was fond of Lynch so he had the opportunity to try and wrap it up - but that sort of meant trying to explain Spike and the bug ship at DW - nothing much else. It was a real pity, because I believe that Lynch is the only comic author who really ( ... )

That's disappointing, although not surprising. If it had been Angel instead the writer(s) probably would've written some grand scene where they confess how much they've missed each other and that their love is eternal.

I could imagine a scene with some awkwardness between them at their first encounter, and I can imagine Buffy saying the whole, "Two what do you know and how can you help..." line because it seems like they were reunited at a rather hectic time and it's like them both to just jump in the fray. The first line, though? Not so much. That seems really OOC.

I will post the sequence of Spike's entry back into Buffy's life - reading some of those pages of the post Buffy-Angel Great Space Frak makes me so disgusted all over again with Brad Metzler Twilight Arc. Then we go into the last phase of series with Issue 36 which Joss Whedon wrote. I had actually forgotten that this was Joss Whedon who wrote Issue 36 - I still can't understand what the hell he was going after with his treatment of Buffy and Angel in this issue. What his intention was for turning Buffy and Angel into this disgusting couple, I don't know. If this had not taken place after Buffy and Angel had been responsible for the deaths and destruction of who knows how many innocent people or after Buffy had betrayed her Slayers and herself - perhaps it would not have been so disgusting to me. And, make no mistake, Buffy was thinking Angel not TwiAngel when she goes off with Angel. and It's like Joss Whedon wanted to have it both ways with using her as a sexual avatar and betrayer and then wants to blame the universe as her ( ... )

You can see some of the panels from the new issue #27 here - https://picasaweb.google.com/103058662790492748180/6286508679189232945?authkey=Gv1sRgCKHysqv5ious4AE

I will post a few panels here for discussion but there are too many to post them all here. Some outstanding artwork - particularly for Spike and Buffy.

OH thanks for posting this.

Well if they are going to mess with the Spuffy this is better than a break up. Seems Spike is the high road guy and Buffy is kinda of out of control (but I haven't seen the previous so not sure if everyone is being too hard on her).

Lovely art work and the story looks interesting. Amazing how many dead have returned in the comics and not as vampires! LOL

Thanks again.

The worse "bring back" characters, IMO, is Fred who had been described in the series as having not only been killed but who had her soul destroyed as well. Illyria had taken over her body and the only remnants of Fred were echoes of her memories that Illyria could access. Fred now not only has come back post the Severin/Siphon-Illyria magic energy explosion but she return with sufficient strengths that she can actually control Illyria's using her body. Illyria comes out occasionally like when her God Strength and Powers are needed - totally dumb, IMO.
