I looked at Seeing Red in the context of the season theme of evil humans are capable of. Buffy's treatment of Spike during that season was evil. Even the slayer, as proven by Faith years ago, can be evil. Even the saintly Buffy has evil in her heart

There is no way, IMO, that the writers and Joss Whedon could take the courageous path of exploration of Soul and what the concept means to Western and actually all human culture. There are very few, if any cultures, that do not have some concept of "life spirit-life force" in their social structure and visions of life on this planet. Add how huge the concept of Soul-Life Force is connected to the societies of the Western World that the Buffyverse is placed within - it would have needed a very sophisticated approach to the series and its vampires-demons vs human conduct to explore outside of the easier - Soul = Good and Buffy's dogma of Soul = Acceptance & Good
