Apparently you and I thought the same thing about Ed's choice to use himself like this. Of course Ed would keep this to himself. He's always put his loved ones' feelings and concerns ahead of his own. :( I knew Ed's life would have to have been cut short. The only question was by how much. Assuming Roy made it to his sixties here (most men are silvery headed in their sixties right?), that would put Ed in his mid to late 40's, half a lifetime. hmm. Maybe Ed was hinting at what he'd done when he said that "half my life for half of yours" thing. :(
Maybe he’ll carve that array in dirt or flame and try the one thing he swore he never would.
I don't see Roy needing an array for this. I've got a feeling that he'll mourn himself to death soon enough and find the other side easily enough, with Ed there waiting for him.

As for the array bit at the end, let me just say it wasn't planned. He just threw that in and I think with the mind set of opening the Gate and walking through, basically a brilliant alchemist's goodbye to the world. Poor thing, I don't usually do this to them but the prompt just forced it!
