Tags are sort of like a folder system that you can use to cross-reference your journal entries with. For example, one of my tags is 'bread,' another is 'misc. whining,' another is 'food,' another is 'spousal torment.'

They enable you to group entries by a collective theme, and they enable you to go back and find certain things relatively quickly. You can mark entries with more than one tag.

When you write journal entries using the LJ interface, you simply fill in the tag box, and LJ will create new tags as needed. Some journal styles will display the journal's tags as part of the default style, some won't. It's simple to deploy, rather a powerful tool once in use for a while.

I hope that helps.

ciorstan - I love your icon!!!!!

And yes, that's tags in a nutshell. If people can view your tags page then they can pick a tag and look at all posts with that particular tag - say if you go to my page and click on the office tag then you'll get all my rants about the office. Likewise if you click Pennsic then you'll get all my Pennsic related posts. I have quite a few tags - it's very helpful!

It would probably have been a little more helpful if I'd said outright that you make up your own tags. Meaning, that if you want, say, a "smelly adolescent underwear" tag, then all you have to do is type it into the tag box as you're composing a rant on smelly adolescent underwear.

eridun, I tend to collect silly icons. I even pay for extra icons so I can, um, complete the set.
