I had a dream last night

I had a dream last night in which God appeared on earth, and was pissed off that we were having so many wars.  So He just set up barriers between all the countries that nobody could cross - they were like cool God forcefields - and decreed that they would stay up for 1,000 years.  However, He decided to maintain the internet so that people could ( Read more... )

Yeah, that would be discouraging, but in reality, in much less than 1,000 years, all of us humans would kill ourselves over petty shit.

I had a dream once that Jesus came back to Earth, took a look around and said "fuck this shit". Then he wiped away every trace of humanity and turned all the people into extinct or endangered animals. It was pretty cool.

I've got an alternate ending to your dream, Edmund. Oddly enough, I happened to be preaching this morning from Isaiah 2:1-5. Interesting timing, eh?? ;-)Isaiah's vision is "the rest of the story", I firmly believe.

And a fascinating factoid for you: a former post commander of Fort Meade (an Army base near here that also houses NSA)once told me that the text of Isaiah 2:1-5 is engraved within the walls of the Army War College-- a beautiful irony. The way I figure it, the Army had better learn and train to help create a world in which weapons of war are beaten into instruments of peace, or there's going to be some fierce accountability at the end of all things!

I know you believe God is fiction, but I much prefer the alternate ending. :-)

I should add that there can be a great deal of value in the message, even if the character who delivers it is fictional. Think of how Uncle Sam and Rosie the Riveter inspired the American people during WWII.

Many of the characters in the Bible are now considered to be fictional by the great majority of Biblical scholars - Adam and Eve, Noah, Lot, Jonah, possibly Moses. Nevertheless, the lessons imparted by the stories told about them have great value.

Now of course if you believe the Judeo-Christian God to be real, there may be additional meaning for you. But even as a non-believer I have an understanding and appreciation for how the mythology of Christian orthodoxy has affected Western civilization for the last 2,000 years.

How did the weapons from year two stack up to the weapons from year 999?

I don't know - didn't dream a detailed analysis. I'll try to find out for you on subsequent nights.
