I have reached the phase in my life where most of the people I know are interested in having babies. It came later than I thought it would, but well. There you have it.

Halloween
We were supposed to go to a party for Halloween. But we didn't because our ride's partner suffered an injury (apparently related to stupidity). I had been mildly looking forward to going to the party, but quickly acclimated to the idea of not going ( Read more... ) -
mmmmm.... pears....
I'm eating a bowl of warm cooked pears while waiting for the water in my canning bath to boil. It is close to the best thing that I have ever eaten in my life. -
crappy canned peaches and excellent canned pears
The crappy peaches turned out fairly well when canned. Admittedly, I added a TON of sugar to them, so now they taste quite a bit like store peaches canned in heavy syrup. Heavy syrup must be the way that canned peach manufacturers make up for using the crappy peaches ( Read more... ) -

I canned 7 quarts of sliced peaches. I don't know how they will really turn out, but they seem ok. They're a lot sweeter than I would have made them if the peaches had been good ( Read more... ) -
stupid peaches
So the two boxes of peaches I got at the Farmer's Market on Saturday are crappy. I wouldn't eat them plain - they're sort of tasteless and mushy. I'm extremely disappointed in them ( Read more... ) -

I need to take my dog in for a check-up and to have a ugly growth thingie taken off of his nose. Anyone have any excellent veterinarian recommendations near Gateway? "Cheap" is less important than "good," but reasonable cost is sort of important.

Canning updates
The pear butter did not thicken as advertised. It sat around in the crockpot overnight, but I think the pot turned off sometime in the middle (it's got a timer and doesn't just stay on forever). It's thicker than it was yesterday, but not as thick as what I imagine when I think of pear butter. Right now, it's cooking away on high with the lid off. ( Read more... ) -

Today, I started on the pear butter. I had bought a box of pears and probably 2/3 of them were pretty ripe. I cooked up the ripe ones into pear sauce and it's currently in the crock pot cooking and thickening (overnight). It tastes pretty good now. I think it's going to get substantially thicker and potentially stronger flavored ( Read more... )
