Economic crisis may be new to traditional markets in the past decade, but it’s not new to crypto. During the past 3 years that we are in this business, we’ve seen at least two “crypto winters”. I am also old enough to remember 1998 in Russia and 2008 in Europe/world.
What I’ve seen is that there were opportunities coming out of all of them.
👻 Building time
After December 2018 boom in crypto, the market collapsed. Most teams that were there for wrong reasons or focused on wrong activities died. Teams that raised tens and hundreds of million dollars but didn’t know how to manage it died. “Only when the tide goes out do you discover who’s been swimming naked.” Unfortunately, a few good teams who couldn’t manage runway died too (“you can become insolvent before markets become efficient”). But the strongest and longest lasting players in crypto emerged from 2019 winter and it became clearer who was who. The best teams that survived focused on staying calm and building things heads down, without spending too much and carefully investing in targeted strategic initiatives. Stay calm. Think long-term. Build things. Save to invest.
👻 Buying assets/investing
The best investments are done during crisis. Of course, it’s great to have cash to invest at the time. But there are always investments that can be made. If not real estate or equity, it could be investments in education, building new skills, building relationships, building new habits. Investments of time vs money.
👻 Hiring great people
When I worked in big corporates, the best people I hired were in 2008. There were way more high quality candidates in the market than I’ve seen in several years after. We could not pay well, had hiring freeze, short-term contracts/internships, but still hired the best people.
👻 Pursuing opportunities coming out of crisis
There are always people who prosper after crisis. I mean it in a positive sense, not in a sense of taking advantages of those who were less lucky. There are always new businesses emerging from the crisis, the ones that solve problems that become more urgent and more exposed. Inefficiencies of financial system. Inefficiencies in pricing. Inefficiencies in distribution. Who knows, maybe this crisis will speed up much needed innovation in healthcare. There are also businesses that seasonally profit from shocks like the much-hyped “future of work” tools, hygiene products , etc. Not sure these are good opportunities long-terms, but these colluded serve as places to “survive” the wave.
👻 Selecting the right partners
During difficult times, people show their best and their worst. If you had doubts before, this is the time when things become increasingly clear. And if you successfully went through difficult times with a partner, this strengths the relationship like nothing else. In personal and in professional lives.
