"I have long wanted to be a bard, and equally long thought it was an impossible goal. I will never be popular enough, dedicated enough, passionate enough, or talented enough to accomplish it, will I? And besides, I'm always being derailed into other tasks that I am apparently better suited to, like counseling, or tech support. I am learning, slowly but surely, that is a fallacy - that I can and should be a problem solver AND a counselor AND a bard, because "Priestess" means all of these things

On the contrary, if I thought Bards were just singers, I would already be one.
The reason I don't tend to accept that I can be a Bard is that I *do* believe they're educators, politicians, historians, and so forth - I've thoroughly internalized Pern's Harper Hall.
And yes, it's the Bards of Celtic tradition that are convincing me that "priestess" qualifies.
I don't talk about this much with you, and didn't actually get into it in detail here, so I apologize for the confusion, but yeah.
Just so you grok certain bits, when you speak of "bards of Celtic tradition," you're speaking of a very broad range. In Ireland after Christianity if not before, the "bard" was a two-bit traveling minstrel, only good for cheap entertainment in an inn or other such establishment. The filidecht were the sacred poets who kept track of history and praised or condemned those in power as appropriate. In Wales, the bard was much more like the members of the filidecht.

Having attended erynn999's presentation on Filidecht, I'm aware of that, but if I weren't I'd be happy for the info :D
I use "bard" for three reasons. 1: It's common parlance for getting across what I mean to all but CR folk. 2: I can't spell Filidecht without an example right in front of me. 3: I've been working with Taliesin, who I understand to be Welsh.
I learned a lot about youpurplevenusJune 19 2009, 06:56:39 UTC
Gah, *Priestess* one who does whatever is required...someone gave me that one...
I get what you mean about *Bard* I mean, I could become a Devadasi, Tantric Surrogate, Trophy Wife...but I don't for the dame reasons you list here.
Oracle, seems to be something you are, divination something you do.
Singing as a teaching tool is a fascinating concept... its beautiful to see the world as a song. I never thought of it in that way.
Cowboy and I have had many discussions about dependency as a coping skill and a survival set. He swears relating isn't a way to get one's needs met (well, it isn't entirely reliable, but neither is hunting, fishing, or gathering) until he sees it in motion, or finds himself providing what I need.

And, I should give you some in return, eh?

I give you Curiosity, Mysticism, Existentialism, Game Mechanics (yeah, I know, that's a phrase), Totem.
Okay, I admit it, this list is inspired by our conversations this quarter ;)
