Let Your Light So Shine

One of my students posted this quote as part of a longer post. I thought it was very appropriate for a wide variety of reasons:

We are all meant to shine, as children do.

I think she means "as children can." Childhood isn't about shining often enough.

I don't think that childhood is about shining, but yes, I take your point. I think what she's getting at with the childhood ref is the idea that we all shine before we're taught not to by other humans.

For some people that happens all too quickly.

I agree, but that's actually how I interpreted the original intent.

People being free doesn't mean they act on that freedom immediately.

That reminds me of a quote by Michelangelo I used as my signature at the college, because I found it was a good reminder to people to try to avoid "settling." (Or as Salieri puts it in Amadeus, "Mediocrities of the world, Unite!") It goes:

"The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark."

Oh, and hi! Haven't talked to you in a while. I feel like maybe I should call you on the weekends or on my way home to catch up at least every other week. :)

Yeah, it simultaneously feels like we just talked a little while ago and like it's been ages. Probably because I've been incidentally talking about you several times in the last few days (you and your household, that is - especially my nephew!)
