Movies: Iron Man 3 and Oblivion

I went to see Iron Man 3 over the weekend. I enjoyed it much more than Iron Man 2. I'm pretty happy when Stark is just puttering around and being snarky. I could watch two hours of that. That's what I enjoyed the most about the first movie ( Read more... )

Ha, we saw both those movies yesterday!

Oblivion really bugged me, for several reasons. The biggest was that neither of the women in the movie had any agency whatsoever. Victoria did not show any of the inquisitiveness that someone in her position should have (but did show a ridiculous amount of jealousy, enough to choose to get people killed due to her jealous snit - which I frankly thought was lame) and the only use that Julia had was as a trigger to open up Jack's memories. She can't even shoot straight enough to take out one of the drones - she has to be rescued by a man. (Nicolaj Coster-Waldau, who is a very HOT man, but still, the fact that she was able to accomplish exactly nothing was annoying. Are female astronauts in the future only selected for their model-like looks? Shades of Iron Sky, there...)

Good points! To be honest though I barely noticed the lack of agency while watchingit. All of the characters are basically ciphers except Morgan Freeman and Nicolaj Coster-Waldau. The most enjoyable part of the movie for me was the earth nostalgia stuff -- the football field, the toys and such and Tom setting up his little oasis. It reminded me of some of my favorite video games. I didn't pay to see the movie (snuck in after Iron Man),so my satisfaction meter was set a bit lower than usual LOL

Did you see Moon? I had feeling before the reveal that they were going to turn out to be clones as it just really felt a lot like Moon to me.

What did you think of Iron Man?

We saw Moon and we had the EXACT same thought at the same point! It really did feel like it took a little inspiration from Moon.

I really enjoyed Iron Man. I have a couple of super-minor quibbles (how is it that these people get so hot that they burn things yet their clothes stay entirely intact?) but really, that's just nerd-geeking. I liked a LOT that Pepper became a self-rescuing princess. I am hoping that by "fixing" Pepper, Tony is just making it so she won't blow up because it would be really interesting to see Pepper with those abilities. I also thought they handled The Mandarin really well. No one could figure out how they could make him a bad guy without making him a super-racist caricature, and, well, I think they succeeded.

Yeah, I loved the twist on the villian. Guy Pearce is just so amazing anyway.
