Name: Sloth
Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist [Anime]

History: Little is revealed about Sloth before her creation. She was originally Trisha Elric, and seemed to be just the average mother of Edward and Alphonse. But she was later revealed to have been secretly fighting an illness for years despite looking like a perfectly happy and healthy mother on the outside. Although it was never proved, it is suggested that her husband leaving had weakened her and contributed to her death.

After eventually succumbing to the unnamed disease, her sons tried to resurrect their mother through human transmutation but failed and ended up creating a shapeless mess of blood and organs. It is later exposed that the deformed disaster the brothers managed to construct had lived on and become the Homunculus, Sloth, taking the form of the boy’s deceased mother but having the personality of someone else and no apparent memories of her previous life as a human.

After coming into contact with Dante and the other Homunculi, Sloth’s body slowly took it’s shape as Trisha’s with the aid of Dante’s Red Stones and was given her name. It is shown in a flashback that Sloth didn’t loose her memories as she claimed to. When she first gained consciousness her initial questions were about her sons and husband, but her new master Dante convinced her to forget about them and focus on the task the rest of the Homunculi had been given: to find or create a Philosopher’s Stone in return for being reverted back to a human.

Shortly after she disguised herself as Pride’s secretary, Juliet Douglas, and worked in the military keeping an eye on the alchemist within the organisation. As the other Homunculus in the military (Pride) held the place as the führer giving orders and manipulating those under his power, it was Sloth’s job to provide a link and information to the rest of the Sins. Despite being one of the youngest of the group, she makes efficient use of her position and is even seen giving orders to Envy (the oldest Sin at 400 years).

Her true identity is first suspected when Sciezka comes across multiple contradicting records of the human Juliet Douglas claiming she died 15 years ago. She is first discovered by Maes Hughes, who is swiftly killed by Envy, and later by Winry Rockbell, who notices her resemblance to Trisha. Afterwards, she reveals herself to Ed and Al shortly before trying to kill them, but is greatly weakened by the remains of Trisha’s dead body. In the end, it is her close relationship with Wrath which ends her, as Wrath uses his ability to transmute the two of them into one forgetting that he had previously absorbed her weakness, Trisha’s remnants.

Sloth will be taken from episode 47 just before her death.

Personality: Distinct from what her name suggests, Sloth doesn’t actually show any specific signs of being especially lazy or idle throughout the anime. Instead she demonstrates more of an apathetic and unconcerned attitude to most situations and appears to be one of the calmest in the group despite also being the youngest. When Maes Hughes has obviously caught on to her identity Sloth is able to remain perfectly composed when answering his questions. Likewise, when Edward traps her inside the transmutation circle Lust had created, her only words are “You’re betraying that person?” complimented by a confused and slightly concerned expression rather than the typical shocked and angry feeling that usually accompanies a publicized betrayal.

Like all the other Homunculi she is ruthless when it comes to getting what she wants and won’t hesitate to kill anyone who gets in her way, her own creators and previous children included. Additionally, she is shown to be initially hateful of the ones who created her (a trait shared by Wrath and Envy) though the hatred is later on exposed to be a mixture of pain and general confusion. Though not as sarcastic as Envy, Sloth displays some amusement from mocking and teasing others. In the fight with Ed and Al she constantly acts as Trisha Elric using her opponent’s love for their mother to her advantage in battle.

Similarly to Lust and Wrath, Sloth is haunted by the memories of her past and and unconditional yet desperate desire to become human underneath her cold exterior but tries, unsuccessfully, to push these feelings down so they don’t interfere with her. Despite attempting to dispose of her “children” so she could leave the past behind and prove to herself that there was no longer any connection between them, her last words as she fades away are used to tell them to take care of themselves proving that she was hiding her true emotions all the time and secretly still cared about the two boys.

During her life as a Homunculus she shared a very close family-like relationship with Wrath, seeming to have subconsciously used him as a substitute to replace Ed and Al and implies that even though she is capable of being extremely cruel and malevolent there is also a softer side hidden inside her.

Biggest Fear: Although she’ll never admit it, her biggest personal fear is Edward and Alphonse. Not because they were the ones who killed her and could do so again, but because it’s so painful confusing for her to remember the past. However, as a Homunculus, she shares the trait with the others of fearing her past human’s remains as they are a Homunculi’s biggest weakness.

Powers: Like all Homunculi, Sloth has increased speed, agility and astonishingly rapid regenerative abilities. She is most powerful when in water, as she is able to travel exceedingly quickly and control the water due to her ability of transforming her body into pure liquid. She is shown to be able to immobilize and suffocate others easily and her ability gives her immunity to physical attacks such as being shot or stabbed. As shown when she takes the alias of Juliet Douglas, Sloth’s fluid composition gives her the ability to change her skin tone, hair colour and eye colour, though the limit to her appearance altering is unknown. Additionally, her floor length purple dress can transform into a liquid as her body does, but anything else she wears seems to just remain behind.
