3.5/10
Allison did an admirable job in this episode, not that I expected any less from her. The part where Gretchen first confronted Michael at the house was extraordinary.
I did not feel Michael's intentions were conspicuous enough. Overall, the construction of the entire storyline was remarkably shoddy.
Erica had numerous weak spots. I'm still struggling with whether or not I found her to be too over-the-top in the torture scene.
Why in the hell are Clark and Lana still referring to themselves as a couple??? They're friends, sure, but nothing more.
On another note, I'm very disappointed to see Clark giving up on the relationship like this. His demeanor screamed apathy. This was especially harsh to see after their interaction in Vengeance.
I hated the next scene. There were some lovely mother/son moments, but it all felt completely awkward with only the crackling of the fire's flames accompanying their talk.
It bothers me that Clark had to be the one to convince Martha to take the Senate seat when he was also the one who talked Jonathan into running. It just seems a little silly to me that the son is the one ultimately making the decisions here.
Once again, I really do feel that the amount of time spent at the Daily Planet is absurd. They make it look like that's Chloe's full-time job.
Also, they've used that shot of the helicopter going past the Daily Planet globe three times now. It may not be something a casual fan would notice, but I'd like a little variety.
The ending, besides being a tad rushed, was basically identical to last week's. The maudlin score, the sun shining through the window, even the mirror image of someone finding comfort in their parent's arms... It would've been a super nice moment for Chloe if we hadn't seen the exact same thing seven days ago.
I must say, Mark Snow is doing a brilliant job. His finest "Smallville" work to date was the conclusion to Vengeance, and Tomb was great.
With these new developments for Chloe and Martha, the writers really need to find something more that they can do with Lana. She and Clark have the whole yo-yo thing going on now, sure, but what's going to happen when they break up for good? She needs to have more to her story than just her relationships with Lex and Clark. Don't waste such a good actor, please.
This was just badly done. It felt utterly disconnected and alien. Allison's performance couldn't save it.
