"aparteid" is being rather quickly emptied of any real meaning. It's purely symbolic for "evil" and is being deployed in the discourse strategically to demonize that which one doesn't like. I blame Jimmy Carter, He started it.
I can't speak for other people, but to me, Apartheid means, well, Apartheid. No-longer-current policies of the government of South Africa with the goal of segregation of the population along perceived racial lines.
What was it that Jimmy Carter said that started this trend you speak of?
Yeah, that's what I figured. And I just had no comment on it beyond a headshake.
I think "apartheid" is like "ghetto" only not so far along - if you use it in another situation in order to exaggerate and shock, it might work but it also diminishes the horror of the actual meaning.

For the record, the word I meant was 'fairness'.
