I'm so happy that you got to see Deadwood last night. I'm even more happy that you enjoyed it after all the gushy pimping I did. LOL.
The show only improves from here on. I found it took David Milch, the actors and writers a couple of episodes to really hit their stride and get into the characters heads.
I adore Seth and Sol's chemistry. A lot of people were reading slashy possibilities into Seth and Wild Bill, which I could sort of see, but I too believe that Seth/Sol is the better pairing.
I think the original intent was to have Seth as the focus of Deadwood. But Ian McShane quickly steals the show out from under him with his portrayal of Al. Milch realized very quickly that McShane could give Al an unexpected comedic twist and not sacrifice his 'badness' so he let him run with it.

And isn't that what good storytelling is all about. Write for your strongest characters, even if it’s not what you intended originally. When the fans speak, it’s best to listen! Or when you have an actor that just stands out, go with it. Something that C/L forgot along the way. They are trying so hard to shift fans loyalty to make them go along with the story they want to tell, (they are so busy cramming Ben/M down our throats) that they have forgotten what brought us into the tent to begin with.

It's frustrating isn't it? You'd think they'd want the show to do well in the ratings. I sometimes get the feeling that they resent the fact that QAF has drawn in so many straight women.
I'm so glad you liked it! There was never a dull moment, unlike "Huff" or "The L Word", both of which had me watching the clock and wondering, "Is it over yet?" Good storytelling, like you said.
Having watched a grand total of two episodes, I can say that all the characters are interesting. Some maybe more than others, but there's no dead airtime like we get on QAF. It's an exciting, fast-paced story, with great dialogue and well-drawn characters. Maybe this year it'll even win some Emmys.
Never saw Huff or L Word and just having watched one episode it's too soon to tell who I'll like or hate but it's definitely going to be a fun ride! I can't remember the last time I saw anything with that much witty dialogue and no dead airtime!
