Chapter 18
Sam gave me directions but otherwise we stayed quiet. He tried to call Dean, though.
"He's still not answering?" I asked when Sam ended the third call without saying anything.
"Take the next on the right."
"Reception isn't good out there." I felt like I needed to emphasizes that but I doubted that was the reason for Dean being incommunicado.
Dean's car was parked a little out of sight but Sam had no problem finding it in the dark. This was probably the same spot they'd used last time. I wondered if I'd find blood on the ground around here and for the first time I was grateful for the darkness.
I'd barely stopped the car when Sam opened his door. He would have jumped out but in his condition his movement was slower than we both liked.
"Cold." He patted the hood of the Impala and used the car for support while he made his way to the trunk.
Years ago I only had a quick glance at the hidden weapon compartment so I couldn't say for certain but this time it looked fuller. Like they had added stuff over the years. Some things were quite obvious, wooden stakes for vampires for example, but why on earth did they have bottles of water in there? Maybe for a similar reason as they had the salt. I knew what the salt was for but I wasn't keen on finding out what the rest was for.
Sam casually used a shotgun to hold the lit open and shoved a duffel bag in my arms.
"Hold that." Sam had to lean at the car to hold himself steady but his hands found their way around this mash-up of guns, knives, cans and bags with ease. Despite the fact that I had my own first aid equipment in the car, and I intended to take it with me, Sam packed his too. Along with a spare gun, the other one was loaded and tucked in the back of his jeans, bullets, batteries for the flashlights, a scary big knife, water bottles, not the ones from the arsenal, though, energy bars, a blanket and other stuff.
"Be Prepared" I muttered under my breath but I doubted that this came from little Boy Scout Sammy, this most certainly came from a life in constant danger.
"He took all the antidote." Sam mumbled more to himself while he searched though one of the bags.
"Antidote?"
"You remember the scorpion tail part? Dean took the antidote. Here." Sam gave me a flashlight and closed the trunk. "And take the bag. You stay right behind me."
My mind was still stuck on the poisonous part so I took the things he gave me without really noticing.
"Sam." I hurried to catch up with him. For a wounded man he suddenly moved way more swiftly than I would have thought was possible.
"We should call the police or animal control or somebody." I suggested but kept up with his pace. The safety of the car disappeared behind black trees. "Tell them there's a wild animal on the loose."
"We have no time for that. I'm not leaving him out there. Not this time." Sam turned harshly and I nearly stumbled into him. "You don't have to come, Luis. Go back to the car."
The last thing I wanted to do was to go farther into the woods, searching for a supernatural poisonous beast with sharp claws. Sam wasn't on top of his game and Dean was out there somewhere, I refused to think about that most likely he was dead by now. But sitting this out in the car, waiting and hoping for at least one of them to come back? I couldn't do that. So I grabbed the flashlight tighter and pointed the beam of light ahead.
"We doing this or what?"
Sam gave me a nod and we started walking again.
"Do you even know where we're going?" I just had to ask after two minutes of unnerving silence.
"We found its lair." Sam answered and then motioned for me to be quiet. Which left the wind in the trees and the sounds of little critters in the bushes and my footsteps the only noises around us. For some unfair reason Sam's footsteps were almost silent and he didn't flinch at every rustle in the branches near by.
I didn't know how Sam had gathered the energy for a hike in the woods but after about half an hour it started to wear off. By then I had lost every sense of direction and I could only hope that Sam still knew where he was going, or at this point stumbling.
"Just sit down for a moment." I insisted and despite his protest I unceremoniously pushed him down to sit on a half-rotten log. Sam was covered in sweat and was holding his midriff again and for sure I didn't like the way he blinked to focus his eyes. He belonged in a hospital bed but I wouldn't get him there before we'd found Dean, I knew that much.
I gave him water and another pill.
"Enjoy it." I took the water bottle from him and had a sip myself. "Can't give you more at the moment."
"I'm okay." Sam pushed himself back to his feet. "Stay alert. We're close now."
Sam led the way, gun in his hand now with his wrist resting on the other one holding his flashlight. Our combined beams lightening what looked like a path ahead.
"Dean?" Sam suddenly bellowed, making me jump.
"It will hear us." I hissed and listened intensely at our surroundings. For Dean to answer or the creature to come for us, I don't know. Neither of it happened so we kept walking.
Every few steps Sam stopped and yelled his brother's name. Maybe he even wanted to draw that thing's attention to us. Either way, it was unnerving.
I felt ready to snap. Something needed to happen, something, anything, and at the same time I dared the moment something would happen. But we only made our way along the barely visible path until we reached a clearing.
"Dean!" Sam yelled again but only silence answered.
"Sam?" The beam of my flashlight landed on something in the grass. "Is that his backpack?"
