I graduated yesterday! I can now add the letters "MLIS" after my name :D

It was very surreal...but so exciting! I can't beleive how fast the past few years have gone by. Insanity. It was so nice to see everyone again. Strange that I probably won't see many of them for a awhile. It was a bit emotional. I don't think it really sunk in until this ( Read more... )

I think that it's a term you'd have to describ to people a little more. like most titles though. But that term to me says you're a librarian who doesn't work in a library. ? don't know why. Maybe it's because most librarians these days (it seems to me being the outsider) aren't traditional librarians in the stereotype kind of way, so I don't know if putting the "non-traditional" is clearer than just "librarian". Is "unconventional" a word to consider?

I think "unconventional" has a negative connotation to it, but it does sort of describe what I'm talking about...Its a hard thing to describe!

I didn't know librarians had boats! dihedra May 31 2006, 14:48:57 UTC
What does a traditional librarian ship look like?

Hee.

I imagine a non-traditional librarian would be found anywhere where there is a large amount of works, data, papers that have to be tapped into. There must be a staff librarian at hospitals with all the test data, research papers etc going through there. Or if one wanted to target someone for a donation you need someone to go through public financial records, interest articles, etc to come up with the right target. I can imagine that librarians would be useful in developping search engines too.

But what do I know?

What will you be doing, do you think?

you're so silly! ships...pffftttt!

You're right on in your guess...someone who doesn't actually work in a "library" per se, but within another type of institution, whether it be a corporation, law office, the financial services sector, research sector, etc...And you're right, Google hires tons of librarians!

The new buzz word for this is "knowledge manager" which I'm kind of unsure about...can you *actually* manage knowledge? heh.

I like your imagination! FUn! I wanna be a mobile librarian!

I don't know if the person driving a mobile library around would be an actual librarian or not...more likely a library tech? not sure...but I'm sure a librarian would be involved in deciding what went into the mobile library...

non-traditional librarian... the same as a regular librarian but instead of a bun she has a mohawk and she carries a flask that she tips into her tea evey afternoon at tea time with a giggle... that's definitely going to be you.
