It was a small envelope. A pale lilac color, with the word “Clark” scrawled across it in very neat handwriting.

Handwriting he hadn’t seen in a long time.

Only his name appeared. No return address. She must have dropped it off, leaving it on the one small table still left in his loft, when she’d seen he was out.

He’d come up here, one last time, a gold ring in a black velvet box clutched in his hand, to remember. Thinking back on the boy he’d been, staring out at the endless sky, finding the point where the land and the sky collided, or at the house of the girl next door, wondering if he was destined to watch the sky alone for the rest of his life.

Only this time, when he stared out at the sky, he’d be looking toward a future with a woman he loved more than he ever thought possible.

Placing the ring box down, he picked up the envelope.

He opened it carefully, taking out a folded piece of matching lilac paper.

Dear Clark,

You’ve come a long way from the boy who stood in his loft, watching the horizon and dreaming of a life you never quite believed you would have. But today, that boy’s dream comes true, and no one deserves it more than the man you’ve become. I wish you and Lois all the best for a beautiful wedding and wonderful life together.

Love,
Lana

P.S. I told you so.

The warm smile that had formed as he’d read her words morphed into a furrowed brow at her cryptic postscript.

After a moment, though, his mind wandered back. To a late summer night and a damp cave covered with symbols that he’d studied for years, hoping to find answers to a destiny he’d then been afraid to move towards.

He’d found her there, the second time she’d surprised him that day.

“You and Lois.”

“Lois? She's bossy. She's stuck up, she's rude. I can't stand her!”

“The best ones always start that way.”

He chuckled a bit at the memory. Remembered his silence in the face of her knowing smile, the slight twinkle in her eyes at her pronouncement. He folded the note closed, placing it back into its envelope and tucking it into his jacket pocket.

“Clark?”

He turned at the sound of his mother’s voice as she climbed the steps, his soft laughter dying down a bit.

“What is it?” she asked, a curious smile on her face.

He smiled, patting his coat pocket. Then he picked up the ring box, ready to head over to put it safely in the hands of his best man, and leaned down to give his mother a quick peck on the cheek.

“Let’s just say I was reminded of how lucky I am to have some pretty amazing women in my life.”
