Evan drew a picture once about how he felt Monday mornings. Laura ended up taking it and framing it in her office. She had a lot of his sketches actually, in her house, office, classroom and where ever else she could put them up.

Mondays have always been his least favourite day of the week. As a student it meant getting up early after a weekend of partying and studying. As a teacher it meant dealing with all the students who'd been out partying and studying.

The Mondays Evan hated the most were first days. New school, new set of students, new colleagues and generally no idea if he would be welcomed at all. At least with Atlantis he knew his colleagues seemed to like him, though with Laura singing his praises he didn't want to disappoint them.

On the first morning he drove out to the school he could have sworn his stomach was trying to escape. He was incredibly nervous, terrified that none of his students would take him seriously. The name Evan Lorne meant nothing in the art world. He had a few scattered pieces here and there but they'd been gifts or commissions for people he'd known. He didn't want them to think he wasn't qualified just because he wasn't famous. Being famous under a different name didn't count.

His classroom wasn’t large but it was wasn't small either with an excellent source of natural light. He also had it well stocked with a variety of good quality products he preferred to use and others he knew were good but didn't like himself.

Atlantis' curriculum ran slightly different than the public schools. There were six periods, five that were spent in class and one in the middle reserved for lunch. Evan had four teaching periods and one designated for preparation. During lunch and after hours he knew that several clubs would start meeting once the year kicked off.

The students didn't start arriving until after the first bell rang ten minutes prior to the start of class. They were his advance artists, the ones focusing on portfolio pieces, creating new ones, choosing ones they'd already done that best showcased their talent. They were a small group, about fifteen but Atlantis had always been more picky about who they'd let in that wanted to develop their artistic skills. Dedicated artists were often times more difficult to spot when they were younger than the scientists or the mathematicians. It was a good number though, easier to work with.

His second class consisted of the beginners and those who had to take at least one Arts course in order to receive all their credits. They more resembled public school students than his first class which, in its normality, was a blessing.

Laura met him in his office at the start of lunch.

"How was it?" she asked, sitting on his desk. "Are you already sick of this place?"

Evan shook his head, "I'm more likely to run from this place because of you."

She laughed, "you wound me. Now come on and eat with the rest of us."

The staff room was large and open and full of teachers. Evan followed Laura to the right edge and joined a half filled round table of eight. Daniel and Jeannie he remembered from before and he was introduced to Chuck, the computer programmer and technician and Dusty, Laura's partner in crime.

"Jamie and Adam seem to be dating again," Dusty happily started the conversation up with gossip.

The other four sighed in various stages of dramatic.

"Jamie Markham and Adam Stackhouse have had an on again, off again relationship for the past two years," Jeannie explained.

"The two of the biggest girls ever born male," Chuck interrupted.

Jeannie glared at him, "Adam struggles with his orientation. He grew up in a small, closed minded town and his parents have been less than supportive. We all keep an eye on them just to make sure everything is okay."

"We also make bets on how long they go before they're fighting again," Dusty added.

"Like I said: girls."

Evan wondered if Chuck was just offended that they argued a lot or if he himself wasn't very supportive of the boys' choice of partners.

"I've already been asked to blow up that tree in the east courtyard," Laura announced proudly.

"Think Steven will let us this year?" Dusty's eyes flashed in excitement.

"Nope," Daniel killed their joy. "He'll keep it just to spite you."

Evan chuckled, "I'm surprised you haven't done it anyway."

"Oh they would have, if there wasn't so much politics surrounding the damn thing," Chuck said.

"Politics?" Evan frowned, "Over a tree?"

"It’s an ugly little tree planted by the Board with a little plaque on the bottom saying that Marrick donated it," Laura explained. "The minute that man is out of office I'm burning that sucker. It's terrible."

Evan agreed but he wasn't going to say anything. He'd vowed long ago that he wasn't going to say anything publicly where James was concerned.

Suddenly there was somebody in the chair beside Evan and he turned to see John.

"Hey," John greeted, a small smirk on his face.

Evan's stomach flipped a little, "You look like you've just woken up."

"I did," John admitted. "I only teach afternoons this semester so when I'm up late working I can sleep in."

He gave Evan a smile that made him blush deeply and he hoped that Laura wasn't watching because it would be an endless source of teasing for her.

In his third period he had a design class and he knew the minute Keras Sheppard walked in. The teen was near identical to his father, a little more scrawny and lighter hair but the resemblance was unmistakeable. It was also a smaller class and in which he was able to put a face to Jamie Markham's and Adam Stackhouse's names. They appeared to be good friends with Keras.

He had fourth period off.

Fifth he taught his second and slightly smaller group of introductory art. They were a rowdy bunch and he made a memo to pick up some cheaper supplies in bulk for them.

For a Monday it hadn't turned out that bad. He was seen as just another teacher by some and others listened to his every word. They appeared to like him, but maybe that would change as the year went by.

"Did you have a good day?"

Evan would have to remember that John was an expert at sneaking up on people. He hadn't even seen anyone else in the parking lot.

"I did," he replied.

John was standing beside a silver Jetta and Keras was in the passenger's seat.

"Good," John said smiling. "I'm glad. See ya tomorrow Evan."

Evan didn't move until he was sure his heart had calmed down and John was long gone. John had this hypnotic power over him, the kind that James used to have, but it was so much stronger. He was going to have to learn how to control himself around John, to not get drawn in because while John was probably a much nicer man, James was never going to let him go.
