I think it's a little wrong to make the people who really need the money to get up in front of everyone else and walk back towards the bowls to take what they truly, really do need and probably through no fault of their own. It humiliates the people who honestly do need the money and it makes the people who are fortunate enough to be able to donate feel noble and sorry for those in need. Maybe it's a pride thing, I don't know and maybe your pastor is right to try to make people see past pride, but how will those people who will never need to take money from a bowl to buy groceries for the week for their children ever experience the humiliation and breaking of pride in that hugely public way?

But why are we so prideful when it comes to having money? The week before they talked about materialism and how it manifests in our lives in so many ways. I think he wanted people to draw back on those ideas and see how money can be used for good. There are so many people who are jobless right now because the economy sucks, and it's not their fault, like you said. This was just a way for people there to feel more connected to one another. I've never come across someone in that faith community who seems fake or self-righteous. I see where you're coming from, definitely, but those aren't the feelings I walked away with that day.
