Title: Truncated
Part: Two
Description: The webcam's are on: what does that mean for the girls? Confusion, nerves, idiocy - and that's not even half of it.
Rating: Fine for all! :)

*-*-*

Her entire body was consumed with nerves, but Sophie knew that if she didn't do something - and quickly - she would easily sit and look at Sian for the next few hours. Holding her breath, and putting on as much fake confidence as she could, she let her fingers roam over the keyboard. Every tap of a letter sounded like thunder in her head.

*-*-*

sophie :) says: haha you look well shocked, do i really look that bad?! :o

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: come off it soph, my cam's probably just crashed or something! are you wearing your fave top? :)

sophie: yeah just chucked it on this morning! is the picture clear, like can you proper see me ok?

*-*-*

Sian tried to keep her reactions under control, fully aware of the fact that Sophie could now see everything she did. 'If only you knew how clearly I can see you, Soph.' She hesitated before replying, unsure of how to go on. How could she answer without sounding weird? Yesterday, she could have responded to pretty much anything Sophie said to her - they were close friends, so it came with the territory. Yet, all of sudden, simply because she could see Sophie's face for the first time, everything had become different. Sian seemed to have become instantly aware of every little muscle in her body. What was most worrying, perhaps, was that Sian now cared about what every  one of those muscles was doing, and she had no idea why. Well, she had one idea, but that wasn't an option; there was no way that was an option. A ding from her computer brought Sian out of her reverie, and to her embarrassment - huge, massive, world-ruining embarrassment - she saw that she'd blushed bright red, and that Sophie had brought her hand to her face and was giggling. "God? You there? Make the earth swallow me. Now."

*-*-*

sophie :) says: sian?...

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: sorry! yeah i can see you great, i mean it's really clear and all :)

sophie :) says: why are you blushing? haha did someone else say something funny? :P

*-*-*

Sophie's stomach lurched as she hit the enter key, her grin falling away. The thought of Sian talking to anyone else whilst they were on webcam made her feel strange, and since she didn't recognise the feeling she tried her hardest to ignore it. Sophie's mind was reeling, struggling to keep up with what was going on. Firstly, Sian had blushed when she'd mentioned her webcam quality. Why on earth would she blush? Sophie had decided it was one of two things: either Sophie looked awful, and Sian couldn't bear to tell her, or someone else Sian was chatting to had said something that had caused the blonde's cheeks to colour. As Sophie considered the last scenario - the most feasible, she admitted to herself - her stomach flipped over again, as if she'd reached the edge of a bridge and was about to bungee-jump. 'Why is it doing that? Sophie, you're not seriously sat here thinking you're the only person she's talking to? Are you serious?!' Sophie shook her head slightly - she annoyed herself immensely, sometimes.

*-*-*

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: no, no one said anything lol :P i just got a little embarrassed cos i look like rubbish!

sophie :) says: no you don't sian, you look lovely! your hair looks blonder on cam :)

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: not too blonde is it?
Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: lol no idea why i said that! sorry soph i'm just a little tired :P

*-*-*

'Wow, that was a smooth move, Sian. Brilliant. I love it. You may as well have typed "I'm an idiot, hope that's not too much of an inconvenience!" and sent that instead! Just wait, I give her 10 - no, 5 - minutes until she disappears offline suddenly, never to appear again. I can't believe you just said that. Do you not think before you talk?' Sian chastised herself over and over, as she felt the blush rise in her cheeks again. Why couldn't she get this right? Her eyes absent-mindedly ran over her empty toolbar - there was no one else in the world Sian would consider talking to right now. 'How can she not realise how brilliant she is? As if there's anyone else I'm chatting to!' Sian frowned slightly - '...wait, what?'
Just as Sian was about to write another inadequate sentence to Sophie, trying desperately to keep her eyes off the brunette, a notification sound beat her to it. Sian's looked quickly over Sophie's response, a kick vibrating from her stomach through her whole body. 'O-oh r-right... wow...'

*-*-*

sophie :) says: lol too blonde? are you kidding? it's amazing, the perfect colour! your eyes are all shiny :)

*-*-*

It was Sophie's turn to shout at herself. 'What are you playing at?! Using the 'p' word already?! You may as well just tell her you think she's fit!' The last thought went unchecked, and caused Sophie to gasp. Was that what this was? It couldn't be! This was classic Webster behaviour - getting all worked up over something, jumping to a ridiculous conclusion, only to be embarrassed when you're proven horribly wrong. Sophie bit her lip, forgetting for a few seconds that Sian could see her, and stared, unabashed, at her blonde best friend. 'She's a girl. I don't fancy her. Yeah, exactly! She's just really pretty. Really really pretty. Unbelievably pretty, even...'

*-*-*

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: lol my eyes are horrid! i look really tired today, but as if i could say no to you testing your new webcam! ;)

sophie :) says: hahaha yeah thanks, i was desperate to see if it worked! you know what i'm like, i hardly know what i'm doing on a computer anyway, but this is pretty snazzy right?!

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: very! i can't believe how clear it is, and it isn't lagging at all.. but i don't get it soph, why did you neeeeeeed to cam with me? surely there's some fit boy you could have tried your charm on first?! ;)

*-*-*

'M-my charm? I have charm? She thinks I have charm...?'

*-*-*

'Please don't say there's a lad, please don't say there's a lad...'

*-*-*

sophie :) says: a guy?! no thanks! you know if it doesn't get my best friend's approval then it doesn't get my approval! and somehow that counts for me too, or my face anyway lmao!

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: your face defo gets my approval! :)
Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: woah that sounds so weird.. you know what i mean though right soph? lolol! you're dead pretty!

*-*-*

By this point, both girls were bright red and giggling together. They could both feel the awkwardness in the conversation, and it was as though they could taste the tension. Neither was entirely sure what was going on, and the lines were only blurred further by what happened next. After they stopped laughed at Sian's comment, they each felt the gravity of the situation.

*-*-*

Sophie's shoulders stopped shuddering from the laughter, and she tried to regain her composure. A stubborn smile refused to wipe itself from her face; a reminder of just how happy Sian made her. Just thinking about Sian, and all the funny things she came out with, made her stomach erupt in butterflies. 'Why don't you live closer? Why, why, why, why?' As Sophie thought about what it would be like if Sian still lived in Manchester, she found that her eyes had come to rest on Sian's image. Sophie could hear herself in her head - 'Stop staring! You look like an idiot! Oh my god she's gonna think you're a freak! Stop! Who stares at their best friend?! SOPHIE WEBSTER!!!' - but she was powerless to stop what was happening. Sian was just too... beautiful to stop looking at. Sophie's fingers touch-typed a reply to Sian, her eyes never leaving the blonde girl sat in Blackpool.

*-*-*

sophie :) says: i hope you realise how pretty you are too, miss powers :)

*-*-*

Just when Sian thought her body couldn't take any more of a beating, she read through Sophie's reply and reeled as her stomach somersaulted yet again. Her fingertips rested on the keyboard but she couldn't come up with anything to say. Truthfully, Sian was unsure what she wanted to say to Sophie at all. Nothing sounded like it would be good enough in her head. Whilst Sian was busy wrestling with her thoughts, her eyes decided it would be a good idea to sneak a peek at Sophie - and what a complication that was. Sian immediately noticed that Sophie must have been looking at her, from the direction her eyes were pointing. 'Why aren't Soph's eyes moving? Has her cam frozen? Oh, she moved slightly - no, it hasn't frozen, then. So what's she not moving her eyes for?' It took way longer than it should have for Sian to fathom that Sophie was staring at her - and that she was staring right back. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up - what was this girl doing to her? Sian briefly considered what life would have been like if her Dad had never moved to Blackpool (and forced her to, as well), because Sian was originally from Manchester - where Sophie was right now, it pained Sian to admit. Things could have been so different...
Sian had no idea, obviously, that she was thinking about exactly the same thing as Sophie was. Sian's eyes rested comfortably - almost too comfortably - on Sophie's image, trying to burn her into her mind so she could never forget how amazing she looked in this moment. And that's when it happened.
Sophie's eyes moved - but not just anywhere. For some absurd reason, at this ridiculously inappropriate time, just as Sian was very obviously staring, Sophie flicked her eyes over to her webcam. For the longest time - about three seconds - she thought it would be a good idea to look into her own webcam. Sian's heart stopped as the brunette, in effect, stared back at her. Sian felt as though they were having a conversation with just their eyes, as though nothing in the world existed outside their little bubble. 'Our... p-perfect little bubble.'
She would have fallen right then and there if it hadn't have been for the hour's (or so) distance between them, and the clunky desktop computer whirring noisily, a reminder that Sophie wasn't really there - yet.

*-*-*

Sophie, blissfully unaware of what she was doing to Sian, returned her gaze to the blonde's webcam, half expecting a response from her, half hoping she could sit here and look at her all night. A knock at her bedroom door made her jump, and she realised just how deeply involved in the whole "Sian-webcam-first-time" situation she'd gotten. Quickly clicking away from the chat window, thus hiding the webcams, Sophie turned and stammered in a hoarse voice, "C-come in!"
Sally Webster, Sophie's mother, opened the door and poked her head around. "Just came in to say goodnight, love. You better be getting yourself to bed soon, you've got college in the morning, and you can be such a pain sometimes! Besides, your voice sounded a little rough then, I hope you're not coming down with something. Switch off that computer and get your head down for the night, Soph. It'll do you good." Sally smiled at her daughter, hoping she hadn't come across pushy. Like every other mother in the world, she simply wanted what was best for her little girl.
"I'll be fine, mum. Just gonna finish off this bit of homework then I'll switch it off, don't worry. Goodnight, love you!"
"Love you too Soph, night." Sally closed the door softly, trusting her daughter to do as she'd advised.
Dreading the look on Sian's face, Sophie turned back around and brought up her and Sian's chat. Sian sat there beaming, still looking as amazing as before. A wide smile breaking out across her face, Sophie's fingers hit the relevant letters then the enter key, thoughts of going to bed momentarily obliterated.

*-*-*

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: was that your mum, soph? :D

sophie :) says: yeah, oh godddd :$ she said i have to go to bed soon! said i'm a pain in the morning, hahaha that's only because she shouts so loud! you'd think we were all deaf in this house the way she goes off in the mornings!

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: omg soph lmao! yeah i better sleep soon too actually, all this webcam stress has really taken it out of me lol! :P

sophie :) says: really? i didn't want it to be a big thing, i'm sorry! i should have asked some1 else... :(

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: don't be silly!! i'm only kidding :) i'd have hated it if you asked anyone else!

sophie :) says: :o really? why??

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: umm, because i'm the most important person in your life, your best mate and the person you love the most? ;D lolll jk what i mean is i'm really glad you felt you could do this for the first time with me :) it means a lot <3

sophie :) says: it was only ever gonna be you sian, let's be honest yeah? you *are* my best mate! :) besides it was worth it for that blush earlier.. ;) still convinced you're taking to some lad you won't tell me about!

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: don't you need to go to bed, ms webster?!?!?!

*-*-*

The last thing Sian wanted was for Sophie to leave, but her cheeks couldn't take any more discussion of "The Blush". For some odd reason, she was desperate to stress to Sophie that she was the only person Sian was talking to, and that how could she even think of talking to anyone else, but Sian didn't want to come across as weird. Sian knew Sophie now had the upper-hand. She'd be teased about this blush for days now - unless she did something about it.
Patiently abstaining from replying, Sian waited for the perfect moment. All she needed was for Sophie to look at her for more than a second. Sophie didn't seem able to keep her eyes still - they were darting from one place to another. Sian, refusing to believe that she was the only thing going on on Sophie's computer right now, tried to ignore the pangs in her heart. She was sure that if she just waited, waited, waited...
There! Sophie was looking, Sian was sure of it. Gathering all her courage, and praying this worked, Sian looked directly into her own webcam, just as Sophie had earlier. She held her eyes there, looking deeply down the lens, envisaging Sophie stood in front of her. It wasn't part of her original plan, but a spontaneous half smile spread over Sian's face, and before she could stop it, she noticed movement on Sophie's webcam. Looking back down at the brunette, Sian could see that Sophie appeared to be breathing heavily, and blushing deeper than Sian had seen all night.

*-*-*

sophie :) says: what did you

sophie :) says: what did you just do?

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: looked at you. really looked at you - you did it to me earlier

sophie :) says: did i?

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: did you feel it too?

sophie :) says: did i feel wh

sophie :) says: yes

*-*-*

Sophie had no idea what was going on. She'd been innocently staring at Sian (again), when all of a sudden the world had caved in. It had felt like Sian was looking into her soul. All the air had rushed out of Sophie's lungs, leaving her utterly breathless, and she had had to gulp at oxygen to stop herself from fainting. Had she been holding her breath? Or had Sian stolen it all?
Sophie didn't feel entirely conscious as she continued replying to Sian. What she'd just felt had changed her. She'd had no idea something as simple as a friend - a best friend, a really really close friend, a ... ? - looking at her could make her feel that way. Unsure, yet at the same time entirely sure, of what Sian had meant by 'did you feel it too?', Sophie panicked. Here she was, sat in her bedroom, fully visible to Sian on webcam, looking shocked, confused, "pretty", and completely bowled over by how she felt. 'What is Sian doing to me?'

*-*-*

sophie :) says: i really need to sleep

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: yeah, i better had as well, my dad just shouted up to say i should be turning out my light soon...

sophie :) says: we both finish at 3 on mondays, so meet you on here at 4? as always?

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: defo, as if i would be anywhere else soph <3

sophie :) says: one day you'll get bored of talking to me every day!

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: three months and counting... :)

sophie :) says: such a liar :P goodnight you :) sleep tight! xxx

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: night night soph, sweet dreamssss! xxx

*-*-*

Sophie looked at Sian, and wasn't quite sure how to say goodnight over a webcam - indeed, even if she should or not. Desperate to beat the blush she could feel coming on, Sophie did the next worst thing - waved. Immediately, she checked herself, and let her hand drop really quickly, the blush showing it's victory proudly on Sophie's cheeks.
To Sophie's utter amazement, Sian laughed purely, before waving back - only managing to look beautiful, not like an idiot.

*-*-*

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: lol!

sophie :) says: i looked like a right div..

Sian  --  waging wars to shape the poet and the beat! says: nah you looked cute :)

sophie :) says: you looked way cuter <3

*-*-*

Sophie looked into her webcam, grinned as best she could whilst feeling highly reckless, before leaning down quickly and pulling the computer plug out of the wall, not giving Sian a chance to respond. She heard her computer go abruptly silent, and whilst she knew that doing that was stupidly unhealthy for it, deep down she couldn't have cared less. A nervous smile captured her lips, and she took a deep breath. 'Sian, I don't care how far you live, I don't know what happened tonight - all I know is you're amazing. Really, really amazing. I could have talked to you - and looked at you - all night... but why?' Sophie knew she wouldn't be getting to sleep for some hours yet.

*-*-*

"That... what... h-how could she?!" Sian exclaimed out loud. Her cheeks had flared red violently, and she felt like she'd thrown her stomach off a cliff. Her heart was hammering in her chest, and her palms were ever-so slightly sweaty. All because Sophie had kind-of grinned at her. Sian's father, Vinnie, had reached the top of the stairs on his way to bed, and opened Sian's door when he heard her talk.
"Who you talking to?" His voice held the subtlest note of accusation.
"N-no one Dad, just myself. I was reminding me to get my bag ready before I sleep, which will be right now." Sian hoped she didn't sound as breathless out loud as she did in her head.
"Yeah well get on with it, I'm not messing about with you in the morning. I'll be ringing the school to make sure you're there." At this, he shut the door - a little harder than necessary. Sian hung her head - he was so difficult, sometimes. Turning back to her computer to switch it off, Sian's thoughts were instantly drawn back to Sophie, as her eyes read and read and read the last thing she'd received. 'Me, Sian, cute? Is she blind? Is she mad? I know she's beautiful, and a great person. We click so well.. why have I never got one with anyone else like this before?' Sian smiled to herself, closing her eyes and letting her thoughts return to what Sophie had looked like on webcam.
So alike her best friend, in both her thoughts, and her ignorance, Sian knew it would be a long time until her brain would wind down enough to let her sleep.
