Sophie glanced over at her clock, smiling. '3:48! Nice timing, Webster.' She tried to ignore the fact that she'd lied to her last teacher, claiming she had to leave class five minutes early to make a doctor's appointment. 'Why did I do that?' Sophie knew exactly why she'd done it.
The computer pinged loudly, and Sophie was brought away from her dangerous thoughts. She didn't really want to think about that fact that she'd rushed home from college. Shaking her head to try and clear the tiredness that was lingering from last night, she turned her attention to starting up the instant messaging program. After a few seconds loading, she was logging in, her heart speeding up slightly. As soon as her contact list loaded, her eyes scanned for the only name she ever looked for.
When Sophie didn't find Sian's name on the 'online' list, an almost unnoticeable twinge touched her heart. Sighing, she reprimanded herself. They always met at four o'clock-ish on a Monday, it was her fault for rushing home. She knew it was a stupid idea right from the beginning, but she couldn't have stopped herself even if she'd tried. The thought of having ten extra minutes to talk to Sian was too tempting an offer. Checking the time once more, Sophie decided to head downstairs and make a cup of tea in order to whittle away the minutes. Waiting for Sian to pop up online had never been this agonising.

She sat with her head in her hands as exhaustion swept over her. Sian's eyes felt as though they were glued shut, but that didn't stop her mind from racing. Last night was stuck on replay and Sophie's image was burned into the back of her eyelids - which was why, right now, she was devastated. Sian raised her head and pulled her phone out of her pocket, checking the time. 4:07. She was usually online by 4:05, and she knew Sophie knew that.
'Jesus Sian, since when did two minutes matter to you?' Just as she was about to address this embarrassing thought, the teacher who was supervising Monday detention snapped at her. "Sian Powers, sit up! Detention isn't for lazing around, so get on with that set question. It's going to be a long twenty-five minutes for you if you don't!" The teacher shook her head in dismay before returning to her marking. Sian sighed and banged her head against the table - of all the days to get detention, this had to be the worst.

"You know, there are other things in life other than computers, Soph." Rosie's bottom jaw jutted out as she rolled her eyes, exhaling. "But then, I guess it doesn't help you're a sad, lonely, geeky little girl with no friends! Oh, wait, one friend - who you've never met!" The kettle clicked off as it boiled, and Sophie picked it up straight away. Just before pouring the hot water into her mug, she muttered,
"You finished?"
"What's got into you? You'd usually have some smart comeback to that, even though it wouldn't make sense anyway." Rosie laughed, before realising Sophie's sluggish movements. "OK, seriously sis, what's up?"
"Ugh, just leave it Rosie, yeah?" Sophie finished off her cup of tea with milk, a couple of sugars and a quick stir, before making for the stairs. Rosie stood in her way, a questioning look on her face.
"It would be nice to see you downstairs for more than five minutes of your life, Sophie. I'm sure Sian isn't as anti-social as you - bet she's got loads of mates," Rosie smirked slightly, adding, "and a lad." At this, Sophie couldn't help but react.
"Sh-she hasn't! And besides, what would be the big deal if she did? I don't care!" Sophie stormed past Rosie, tea in hand, her cheeks flaring. This was the last thing she needed right now. As Sophie disappeared out of view, Rosie's eyebrows arched, and she whispered under her breath,
"Could've fooled me, Soph..."

"If we catch you falling asleep in class again, Sian, it'll be another end-of-day session of detention. Consider yourself warned, Miss Powers." The headmaster waved Sian out of his office, his colleague looking on at her disapprovingly.
Sian had never been good without her sleep, and considering the minuscule amount she'd had the night before, she was surprised she'd got out of bed at all. Her dad had played hell with her, and after eventually dragging herself to school, she'd suffered all day. A couple of her classmates had commented on her utter lack of concentration, but she blamed it on nightmares. It was, though, the entire opposite that had kept her awake.
All that was on her mind was rushing home to Sophie - well, webcam-Sophie. Sian exhaled heavily, her mind buzzing whilst her body lagged behind. Thankfully, just as she walked out of the college, a bus rolled up to the stop. She ran as fast as she could, determined not to miss it, waving her ticket madly and shouting. Sian figured her bad luck might've run out for the day, as to her amazement she made it, and almost as soon as she took her seat, the bus pulled away. Sian lost herself in her thoughts as the minutes ticked by.
'I've got to ask her for her number - yeah, good luck getting the confidence for that - because then she wouldn't wonder if I'm late, I could just text her.' Sian gasped out loud as she realised how presumptuous she was being. 'Oh God, what makes you think she's even thought about you all day?! Just because you haven't stopped thinking about her--' She was startled out of her thoughts as the boy next to her laughed quietly, asking, "Are you alright? Or do you just gasp out loud for the hell of it?" Sian turned to look at who she was sat next to, taking in his dark eyes and short hair quickly.
"Um, no, sorry. J-just remembered something I forgot to do in college is all." She smiled in an attempt to reinforce her lie, but she caught herself, and ended up with a puzzled expression clouding her features.
"Is it really bothering you that much?" The boy probed her, a questioning look in his eyes. 'Who is he? Why is he talking to me?'
"O-oh, no it's not bad. I-I mean, it's nothing. It's not bothering me. It's a goo--" Sian stopped mid-sentence. 'Why am I lying?' "I, er, kind of met someone for the first time yesterday. I was just thinking about that. I lied, sorry. There was no college thing." She looked straight at the confused boy, smiling and shrugging.
"You don't make much sense, do you...? Sorry, I didn't catch your name..."
"Sian, I'm Sian."
"Nice to meet you Sian, I'm Ryan." Ryan smiled at Sian, offering his hand to shake. Sian looked down at it, unsure of what to do. Just as she was thinking about shaking it, she noticed out the window that her stop was coming up. Sian re-directed her hand away from Ryan's and up to press the 'Stop' button. 'Saved by the bell!'
"This is my stop! So um, it was nice to meet you too, Ryan. See you around, yeah?" Sian went to get up, but Ryan stopped her, a wide grin on his face.
"Sooner than you thought - this is my stop too!"
          '... or not.'

Sophie, known for her strength of will, gave up. She'd been sat at the computer waiting for what felt like an eternity, and there was still no sign of Sian. Over the course of the time she'd been sat there, Sophie had managed to convince herself that the previous night must have either been a) a dream, or b) something Sian had never wanted. It must have been one of those, since Sian had never been this late in the whole time they'd known each other, and Sophie knew it only took her about fifteen minutes to get home. Sophie began to feel immensely guilty for asking to go on webcam - but in the next breath, she remembered how Sian had gone and bought one within days of Sophie getting hers. 'Sophie. Stop. Caring.'
Reconciled with the fact that Sian obviously wasn't going to show, Sophie set down her empty mug and sighed loudly. 'I wish she'd have just told me. I don't even know what happened last night, or if we should talk about it... I just want to talk to her...' Shaking her head, Sophie brought her knees up to her chest, swearing she'd only give Sian another five minutes, tops. Her situation was no different to how it had been two days ago - so why did she feel so lonely without Sian around?
Five minutes seemed to pass at an alarming rate, and even though Sophie felt like she could have waited hours longer, she knew she shouldn't. This behavior was weird enough as it was. Sophie had never, ever, waited for someone like this - she'd never felt like she wanted to. She whispered quietly to herself, and secretly to Sian, "I miss you." Sophie reluctantly reached out for the mouse as disappointment crushed down on her. The cursor tremored slightly, and she began moving it towards the 'Sign out' button.
For a split-second, Sophie considered giving Sian another of her 'magic five minutes'. She knew she shouldn't, but the thought of talking to Sian was almost too much for her - she couldn't explain it, but it almost felt as though she needed to. With a final shake of her head, Sophie decided to just sign out and be done with it all. Despite how high her emotions were running, she'd just have to deal with the fact that she'd scared Sian off for good. Beautiful, amazing, pretty-much perfect Sian. Sophie felt like she wouldn't be able to speak to anyone in that moment, a huge lump blocking her throat. 'W-why do I feel like this? Why d-do I care so much?! Her thoughts raged inside her head, and she brought the cursor to hover over 'Sign out'. All her strength left her - she thought it might actually be impossible to click the button with her finger.
Ping! Sophie's computer made her jump, a quiet call of shock escaping her lips. Her eyes lay transfixed at the little bubble that had sprung to life in the lower right-hand corner of her computer monitor. 'No...way...'
