Cartooning almost always looks professional because it's so different from person to person. But with anime it's easy to tell the difference between a student and a maeheesster. So that might be why.
Heheh. Your "people don't like my art because it's anime" complaint reminds me of my problems in my fiction class. People don't like my fiction because it borrows heavily from realistic fantasy works of the anime genre. People just don't like certain styles. Screw 'em.
GOD. People just can't appreciate style. It's not something you should diss about, because everyone's different. Someone's opinion is not a fact. If you don't like it, deal with it.
You fight for it. I don't get the problem. You must have a lot of idiots at your school.... Here in Riverside, my HS paper (Poly Spotlight) took on one of the most talented anime artists I've ever had the joy of knowing. Her name was Eunjae. She RAWKED. The first... two months?... of school, people were like, "OMFG we got an anime nerd doing the paper toons, what the shit?" After that.... well, many people wanted her to do MORE stuff, and she got to draw the layouts for Features (I think that was the section...) on special occasions, and was a regular illustrator instead of just occasional cartoonist. She had a great sense of humor and sharp wit, and that won over the whole school.
So just show your smart self through your cartoons, and you'll win over the less stupid ones fairly quickly. Ganbatte, imouto-chan!
