My first reaction to the Oscars...

I only caught the last eight or so awards, but here's my first reaction to the Oscars...

I can't believe Reese Witherspoon won. I should see Walk the Line, because while I think she's been good in movies, I associate her with stuff that's nowhere near Oscar-calibre, so it just doesn't make sense in my head. I mean, when you say "Reese Witherspoon," I think of Election and Legally Blonde and Sweet Home Alabama, not Oscar.

I was disappointed that Crash won best picture. While I enjoyed it, and it was new and different, and it raised some really important issues, and I appreciated that it never begged for Oscar-ness (Cinderella Man, anyone?), it is (in my opinion) a film that has flaws. Not that any movie is perfect... I was also so sure that Brokeback Mountain would win, and when you prepare yourself for one outcome (that everyone seems to agree with), and then it doesn't turn out that way, it's disappointing. I know this probably isn't the case, but it made me wonder if maybe Brokeback didn't win for political reasons... who knows... Ultimately, they're both movies that present important material, and do so in great ways, and considering the conservative state of our nation right now, it's great that they were both nominated.

Oh, and I think it's great that both Crash & Brokeback won their respective screenwriting awards. I know that both of the writing teams had been trying to get their screenplays produced for a while, and they persisted, when studios were too scared to fund them (with their socially-relevant issues), and it's great that their effort and their belief in the scripts paid off.
