Author's Note: Drabble, with a possibility of future expansion. AU in which both Burke/Karev and Hahn get their hearts.
Izzie slipped into the room, a giant smile on her face, excitement in her eyes. “They just left,” she said, coming to stand beside him, “they just left the other hospital with your brand new heart, Denny.”
He smiled back at her, his eyes watering. How could he possibly put into the words the elation he felt? Here was this woman beside him, the most beautiful, stubborn woman he had ever known, telling him that she was going to give him a brand new heart. For the first time in five years, he could dream. He could make his own decisions, his own choices. For the first time in five years, tomorrow was a distinct possibility. How could he explain to her the overwhelming freedom she was gifting him with, the impossible hope for a life, a future, and a happy one at that? “Izzie,” he sighed simply.
But she knew. In a word, in the tone of his voice, she knew exactly what he was feeling. So she leaned over and kissed him hard, kissed him senseless, pouring everything she could into him and feeling it back again, until he had to pull away for lack of oxygen. “I’m taking you out after I get out of here,” he said after he’d regained his breath. “This is good, Izzie. This is five-star restaurant and fancy jewelry kind of good.” Izzie smiled at him, a radiant smile that he’d come to think was just for him, and it struck him that he wanted to make her smile like that for the rest of his suddenly extended life.
So he’d had some time to think about it, when he squeezed her hand tightly and whispered “marry me” moments before they wheeled him into the OR.
