Does anyone happen to know tax law? Or know anyone who knows anyone who knows tax law and wouldn't mind explaining things to me? Or knows where to go to learn about tax law and understand it? Or knows if people do free tax consultations and, if so, where to go to find a person like this? I espescially need to know about the legalities of being ( Read more... )

I know a bit. Not a ton, but I own a business, and they kinda make me brush up a bit for that ;-)

What's the question?

O thanks for replying!

Well, when I posted that, I really wanted to know how exactly a person qualifies as a dependent. Like, how much of my living expenses would my parent's have had to paid on my behalf in order for them to still claim me as a dependent. And, would tuition count? How about money they loaned me, that I'm expected to pay back?

But it's not really crucial I know that anymore, though I'm still curious..

Basically now, though, I'm wondering, is there an easy way to learn tax law? I feel so in-the-dark about taxes, and since I pay them every week, I'd like to understand them a bit more. It'd be great if you could reccomend any way of learning.

Thanks again! :)

That particular question is not "are you a dependent" but "can you be listed as one" ... I know this because my sister botched that one and had to file an ammended return.

You're in college and not independent financially, so that one is a 'yes'

The IRS site has publications that explain some things -- badly.

The instructions on the forms give some hints too. They're terrifyingly incomplete though.

Tax law is extremely frustrating. Poking through the docs on the IRS site has been the best I've found, but it's ugly at best.

I have a very important question. O:

What account are you using to read my journal?

This one, I guess, this is the only account I have...

though, I haven't looked at your journal since the last time we chatted...

...that is seriously, seriously bizarre. See, I have a LJ tracker that basically tells me who's reading my journal, and every single day I get multipule hits from someone who shares your IP address (but is not actually using this account) and I was getting a little creeped out. O.o Does anyone else use your computer or have the same IP address, do you know?
