I've some feelings that I can't get through, I'll just binge on crack and tiramisu

Killing time in the library, in between life-type woe sharing over hot chocolate with Salma, and attending some crazy activist meeting at the Basement. My absence from the entirely alternate reality of grassroots has been far too protracted, and I feel it's about time to return to the sort of meetings in which I can wander in half an hour late to ( Read more... )

Activist meetings:

"Right, item 1 on the agenda: what about the brick-chucking? Why has the level of brick-chucking receded lately? I think it's time we got back to the bread and butter of activism, which is of course hardcore brick-chucking. Have we arranged competitive rates from brick manufacturers, or are we going to use that secret special magical activist power that makes all activist able to summon up bricks from nowhere in confrontational situations? Your thoughts, please, people.."

You should've heard THE FURY on the phone when I told Ellie I'd ended my not-really-intentional-self-imposed month of vegetarianism by ordering lots of stuff from McDonald's. Oh my was I in trouble then..

I'm not insinuating that a degree is useless, of course not. It's merely a personal thing, the "What the fuck is it ever going to do for me?" factor. I suppose you always had some idea of career type things that your degree could potentially lead to when you were studying. I, on the other hand, have come up with a vague list of prospects that require little other than passion and basic-well no, actually quite advanced, but certainly not academic-critical abilities.

I'm glad to have some added perspective, anyway. Too many people fall into the elitist trap of thinking that all smart people get degrees and everyone else ends up in Tesco.

Wise words indeed. Thanks for the sentiment, it really made me nod vigorously when reading that.

Anyway. Cath, wow, how have you been? I adore these unexpected little encounters. I've been thinking of you people rather often of late, as it happens. Fun times. How perfect does Poland seem now, in retrospect? Sarah and I were idly discussing a meet up, as it happens. Obviously it wouldn't be realistic to expect everyone, but it would be aceness to catch up with just a few of you, y'know, the ones we really got on with. I'm sure you have some idea as to who I'm talking about! Seeing this comment earlier really made me realise I need to ger my arse into gear and be less lazy and all round rubbish about keeping in contact with certain people.

I will check out your site in a minute, anyway. In the meantime, take care and I'm sure I'll speak to you in some form soon.

Ellie x

Different? How so, if you don't mind me asking?

Well yes, I am not trying to blame my university at all. Like you said, my beef with my course is far more personal. Some people are gaining enormously from it, whereas I'm currently wondering if I'm methodical enough to benefit from it. We shall just have to see, I s'pose.

No, that made perfect sense. You've raised some very important points. I am currently in the process of having a long think, so I will certainly bear those in mind. Thanks.
