I see you're in Italy. We just honeymooned in Florence, and it was very nice, all the sights were fun, though doing things together is different from travelling alone (are you?). We'd recommend Hotel Roma, a block from the Santa Novella train station (main one). The lobby is elegant and ornate, service very good, at a good price (though we were there during the war). You could trudge there from the station, have a drink at the bar, and check it out. Our ceilings were like 12 feet tall, the bedroom was deep orange-reds and the bathroom solid bright, turquoise tile. The windows alone were like 8 feet high, starting at nose level, and we had a great view of the lively Santa Maria Novella church and plaza with fountain below. Right by lots of great restaurants, and a short walk to pedestrian zone/sights. The plaza is noisy at night, though-- we were perfectly happy with the addition of earplugs to our routine.
