*Wow*, find that out both sort of makes sense given his films and is deeply surprising. The stories Aaron tells about the kids he worked with at the homeless youth services place (Outside In) he worked at are and odd combination of truly amazing and exceptionally terrifying.
It's funny, as I read the first couple of sentences of the article, I expected to be fascinated in my usual prurient fangirl sort of way, but I just wound up with the whole notion stuck in my head, and being deeply moved by it and really impressed in an almost solemn way.
And it does make sense in terms of his films -- moreso really if you listen to the commentary tracks or read about the stuff that almost wound up in Moulin Rouge, but didn't.
It's well worth it -- although you should consider just getting the whole Red Curtain Trilogy thing -- so much cool shit on it -- and Strictly Ballroom is such an amazingly watchable movie.
But yeah, somewhere in the Moulin Rouge stuff (the DVD is so well designed, there's so many layers of stuff, you'll never find all of it) is the hysterical footage of the S&M dance number in the gothic tower that got cut from the film, Catherine Martin bitching about the problem of not being able to use proper slit can-can panties, and the bizarre information about subplots that got excised fromt he script (including the bit with Christian dying in Flanders Field at the beginning of the film, and the whole Count von Groovy thing). It's seriously jaw-dropping weirdness. Also, there's that damn easter egg. Heh.
