So, I deleted myself from dodgeball. I gave it a shot for a long time, but in the end all of those messages just annoyed me. And I could never figure out how to make it give me an address of a bar, which I knew was somehow possible but I could never get it right. Sorry. If you want to let me know that you're out somewhere, send me a regular text

It's a text message service, where you sign up and get connected to your friends (yeah, myspace-stylee), and when you arrive at the Black Cat you "check in" by sending a text message to dodgeball that says "@Black Cat." Then dodgeball sends a message to your friends saying "Tina is at the Black Cat!"

It will also tell you if your friends or your friends' friends are closeby, like at Cake Love or something. It will even send you a photo of your friends' friends so you can recognize them.

And there are all sorts of other options that you can check out at dodgeball.com.

It is a cool idea, but you end up with a whole lot of text messages.

Yeah, but people can choose whether or not they want to receive the message (you can turn off receiving messages for the night fairly easily, though it becomes a pain night after night), plus you can do all sorts of things like tell dodgeball who your crush is, and find out where your crush is hanging out. Also, you can use filters and let some people know where you are but not others. And you can meet new people in theory because you'll know when your friend's friends are nearby.

I think if you and many of your friends are all out every night, and like to all hang out together, it is useful. If you are not, it may be more pain than useful. (Though I will miss feeling good that other people were doing fun things, even if I couldn't!).
