nymphs are not elves, they are small beautiful (the most beautiful) women that live (and are associated with) with a certain place in nature. (mermaids are thought to be nymphs, in Edgar allen Poe's poem "To Helen" he refers to one of these beautiful nymphs of the sea in his 2nd stanza

and there were male versions of nymphs, they were called Satyrs, they weren't like.. beautiful or anything though, they were half-human half-animal.
