Where am I?
I can’t move…
Is anybody there?
Why can’t I see anything?
“Awaken, Nakajima Yuto….”
Who is that…?
“Awaken child…”
My… mouth wont open…
“Open your eyes… “
“W-Who… are you?”
Yuto’s eyes flittered open slowly, he felt himself wrapped in a soft cottony cloak and as he sat up, the cloak melted, leaving him only in a soft white and silver robe.
“Where… am i?” He asked aloud, as a single orb of light swirled around him and his attempts to watch it made him all the more dizzier. Soon the ball stopped before him and as it landed on the ground, he gasped when in a flash a boy appeared.
“U-Uh…” He approached cautiously and as the boy slowly stood up Yuto recoiled in horror.
“Y-You’re me!”
“No… Yuto, this is a manifestation… so that I can speak to you…” His voice sounded so strange coming out of… the other him’s mouth.
“W-What’s going on? A-Am I dead?”
“Yuto… child, you have ascended to heaven after heart stopped during the night.”
“W-What!?”
“Fear not… this is not heaven… you are just outside the heavenly gates… “
“I-I didn't make it into… heaven?” Yuto’s eyes grew wide with horror.
“Child… you are here, because you are one of the few unfortunate deaths… you are here because an angel has pleaded on your behalf…”
“W-What?”
“An angel has pleaded on your behalf…” The other Yuto chuckled as he turned around and walked off into the clouds that parted as he approached.
“Yuto-kun, we the angels of fate oversee the destinies of those who live below our realm. It is our duty to police the births and passings of life in your world. Every once in a while though, the threads of fate stretch to thinly and will break, these are the unfortunate deaths. This thread represented your life…” The other Yuto turned, holding a strand of glittering white string in his hand.
“M-My… life?”
“Yes… you would have stayed with the chords of society… but unfortunately… it seems fate had other plans for you…” A wave of his hands, made Yuto’s eyes widen with shock. There was a giant spindle in the middle of the clouds, its threads all gleaming with the same light that his had, they were all twisted and woven together around a globe like spindle. He walked closer to it, as he heard the voices of everyone in the world all at once. Then he turned to see an angel swoop down beside him and pluck out the last bits of a single thread.
“That person’s life is at an end…” The other Yuto explained as he beckoned for the other boy to come closer.
“You see…. Yuto, when these unfortunate deaths occur, their life is laid out for all in heaven to see, and if an angel is moved enough by your plight, he or she may plead for you to be saved. Rael, the angel of Love has pleaded for you to be given such a chance. And he will present you with your challenge.”
Before Yuto could ask what he meant, he gasped as the other him faded into nothingness, returning to the orb he had seen before.
“Yuto-kun…” A voice came as a soft white dove flew around Yuto now, and landed on the ground. In just a blink of the eye, the dove was gone and a youth stood before him.
“I am Rael, the Angel of Love.” The boy was a wonder, with golden silken hair that danced gingerly between shades and piercing blue eyes. The marvelous silvery wings spread wide as they stretched and returned to their folded state.
“A-Angel…” Yuto felt himself almost go weak at the knees, Just what.. was going on?
“You see Yuto, your life… has ended too fast, and I know that you’re life was just beginning..” Rael flicked what looked to be a drop of water into a cloud, which rippled and as if a pond were below them, the cloudy floor cleared to show Yuto laughing contently with all nine other members of JUMP. It felt strange… to see himself, but at the same time, that smile that he had, the way he openly laughed and giggled as the older boys tickled him for being noisy…
“Your life was just beginning Yuto, the seeds of love were planted, and weren’t given enough time to blossom. I see the love that you have for these nine boys Yuto, and I want you to experience what all who came before you have. The power of such a deep love. “
“L-Love?” Yuto stuttered.
“My challenge to you… Yuto, is that you will return to your Earthly body, and in the time left to you, you will choose one of these nine boys, and when you open your heart to them, and they to you….. the angels of fate will restore your thread, and you can continue to live your life till its end. “
“W-Wait! What … What do you mean Open my heart?”
“Yuto…. If I told you…. It would be too easy wouldn’t it? Find the person who makes your heart beat faster and slower all at the same time, the person who makes you shiver when you’re hot, and the person who can make you smile with a mere glance. You’ll know. But beware…. You will only have two day’s time. After that.. the light from your thread will dissipate, and your bounds to earth will disappear. Heaven will be the only place left to you.” The angel smiled as he gave Yuto a small push with a single finger.
Yuto fell off balance as he staggered to for something to hold on to.
“Two days only Yuto-kun…” Rael’s voice echoed as Yuto felt himself falling through clouds and the rushing winds in the air swirled around his body. He wanted to scream and shout but the sheer force of the air rushing past him kept him from even moving and all he could do was brace for the impact as he was about to hit the ground.
“Hunh!” Yuto sat up in his bed, his body shivered as he felt the coldness of his skin bite into his bones and he sat up, pulling the covers off his body and he ran his hands up and down his frame, making sure he wasn't the victim of broken bones or a cruel practical joke.
“I-I’m alive!” Yuto cheered as he hugged himself and turned around to look outside. But as he did the smile vanished from his face as he saw the face of Rael faintly outlined in the stars. He heard the wind blow and whisper in his ear
“Two days…”
Yuto collapsed onto the floor as the reality of what he thought was a dream hit him.
He was going to die.
For a few moments Yuto wept quietly as he felt so resigned to his fate and his helplessness made him so angry. Why had fate chosen to end his life so early!
“Why!” Yuto shouted and the door to his room opened as a younger Nakajima stood in its arch.
“Nii-Chan…. Are you okay?” Raiya asked as he walked over to his older brother and laid a hand on his back.
“Nii-Chan.. is just… a little.. tired.”
“Go to bed Yuto-nii, it’s really late”
“I… I will…but… why are you up?”
“I was… worried about you when I didn't hear you snoring for a while…”
“I do not snore!” Yuto pouted as Raiya giggled and he led his older brother to bed, the two boys giggling madly.
“R-Raiya… let me ask you something.”
“Hm?”
“I know….. that you’re not the little kid I used to hug and pinch for no reason… you’re older now… so I can ask you things that are more serious…. Right?” Yuto said as he sat up in bed again, and Raiya nodded, sitting on the corner of the mattress.
“Raiya….. what would you do…. If I wasn't here?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well.. if I…went away…”
“Is JUMP doing a tour overseas? I didn't hear about it…”
“Eh… y-yeah… if I were gone for a long time… would you be okay?”
“Of course! I can take care of myself nii-chan! Of course I’d miss you too….”
“Y-yeah…” Yuto nodded
“But I don't want you to worry while you’re away, I can take care of myself, cooking, cleaning…. Everything. I’ll even watch over mom and dad while you’re gone!” Raiya nodded as Yuto felt his worries be put to rest.
“That's good… Raiya… “
“But… try not to stay away too long okay?”
“I….wont…” Yuto wasn't feeling to good about this façade he was using, but he played along with it. It was better than telling his younger brother he was going to die….
When the younger boy had left the room and Yuto laid back down onto his bed, he sighed as he recalled the rest of the conversation he had had with Rael. There it was. There was a chance to be saved….. if only…. He could find which one of his friends…. He wanted to open his heart to…. but therein lies the problem… friends. He only thought of them as friends… which one.. was the one who would save him?
With all this in his mind, Yuto couldn’t sleep, he sat back up again for the third time that night and threw off the covers. He grabbed his cellphone and dialed the first number he could think of.
Ring….
“Pick up!”
Ring….
“C’mon!”
Ring…
“Erhm… H-Hello…”
“Keito! I’m so-“
“Y-Yuto…? Unh… what time is it…?” A very groggy Keito moaned
“It’s… late… b-but… I really …. I really need to talk to you.”
“Yuto…. It’s four in the morning….. cant this wait?” The sound of a head falling into soft cushions came through the phone.
“Keito…. i… I just….. really need to talk to you…. O-okay?”
“O-Oh… okay…” Keito yawned
“I’m coming over right now!” Yuto jumped into some clothes and ran out the door, running his way to Keito’s house.
When he got there, he called Keito again and heard the older boy grumble as he got out of bed and practically stumbled down the stairs to open the door. A shirtless Keito with bed hair opened the door and leaned against the wall with a single open eye.
“Gomen gomen Keito… b-but I really need to talk to you.”
Keito thought for a moment before groaning and standing aside to let Yuto in. The two boys walked back up to Keito’s room where the older boy promptly plopped onto his bed and threw on the covers again.
“What is it Yuto….?” Keito sighed as the warmth of the blanket comforted him again.
“K-Keito… do you… love me?”
“W-What?” Keito’s eyes widened as he suddenly felt very awake.
“I… I just need to know certain things…. Before.. “
“Before what?”
“Keito… if I were to die…..”
“What are you talking about…?”
“I-If I were to you know…. Disappear what…. would happen?”
“I imagine…. Everyone would be very sad…. We’d all miss you.”
“But… if there was a way…..that I didn't have to go…”
“Then I think you should take it.. but Yuto, what did you mean… when you asked me the first question?”
“I….. uh… I… just had a random thought. That’s all.” Yuto forced a smile and nodded eagerly. There was no sense in making Keito say it if he didn't feel that way. False confessions weren’t going to save him.
“Yeah well…. Okay… but it’s late already and I don't want you running all over town in the middle of the night, so just stay here until tomorrow morning okay?” Keito said as he laid back down again. He could feel Yuto moving beside him as the taller boy pulled some of the blankets over him and the two felt as if they were on tour again.
Morning came, and Yuto was the first to wake up, he wanted to waste no time and he grabbed his phone calling each member of JUMP.
“Are you going on like a thousand outings today?” Keito asked as he fixed breakfast and Yuto hurriedly ate the toast before nodding his head. He ran out the door leaving Keito with a pan full of scrambled eggs.
---Yabu---
“Eh? Yuto? What’s happening? Why did you suddenly call?”
“N-Nothing! I just… I wanted to spend some time with you…..”
The eldest in JUMP frowned a little before perking up and giving Yuto a pat on the back.
“Are you okay? Yuto?”
“I’m fine… Ne? Yabu-kun, let’s go... shopping at the new mall that opened!” Yuto tugged Yabu’s wrist and the older, relented.
The pair laughed as they pulled out the most ridiculous outfits for each other to try on, at one point ending with Yuto and Yabu in a pair of matching hot pink pants.
“Uwaa! I haven’t had so much fun in such a long time!” Yabu giggled as he walked out of the store with bags of clothes in his hands.
“Thanks for spending the day with an oldie like me ne? Yuto?” Yabu smiled brightly as he hugged Yuto, and the younger boy’s heart stopped as he felt the warmth in the embrace spread through him. He felt his heart pounding but at the same time no breath came to him. Was this what it was?
“Ja ne… Yuto-kun.” Yabu waved before leaving, not even giving Yuto the chance to ask the question he had been dying for an answer to.
“Maybe….. it isn’t Yabu…” Yuto shrunk as he walked back to his house, dropping off the clothes he had bought.
---Takaki---
“Are you sure you want to come with me Yuto? It may be a while.. “ Yuya asked worriedly as they pushed open the door to their destination.
“Un! I wanted to…. come spend some time with you… “
“O-kay…. “ Takaki raised an eyebrow before waving to the lady behind the desk.
“Takaki-kun! You’re back! What will it be this time!? Just a little touch up?” A stylist asked as he turned the chair before him and waved a welcoming hand.
“Yeah, just a touch up for me…. but afterwards….. my friend Yuto here… would like some direction too…” Yuya nodded proudly.
“Certainly!” The stylist grinned before setting the older boy in the chair. It was such a transformation to watch, as Yuya sat in the chair and only moments later with skilled touches from the man behind him, the boy came out looking far more refined than he did going in.
“Ja…. Are you ready? Yuto?” Takaki asked as he gave him a nudge in the chair’s direction.
Reluctantly Yuto sat down and faced forward as the person approached behind him. Though much to Yuto’s surprise, it wasn't the stylist, but Takaki!
“T-Takaki-kun?”
“I want to give you your styling. Is…. That okay?” Yuya asked, seeing the apprehension in Yuto’s eyes.
“P-Please.” Yuto bowed graciously to him and a smile flashed across the older boy’s face. He closed his eyes and left himself to Yuya’s hands and their soft caresses. It was just like doing make-up for a photo shoot, except this time, he was very aware that it was Yuya touching him. He heard the crystal clear cutting sounds of scissors as it waved through his hair and he felt the cuts fall onto the coverings on his shoulders. As time went on, he felt the heat of the studio getting to him and yet, every sing time Yuya touched him, be it accidentally brushing his fingers against the back of Yuto’s neck, or just the side of his cheek, Yuto shivered quietly to himself. Maybe… this was it?
“Ja! We’re finished!” The older boy exclaimed proudly and Yuto opened his eyes to see himself in the mirror. Unchanged except for a shorter trim of his hair and minor tips in dark brown. He looked up to see Yuya grinning as he knelt down to the chair.
“I’ve always thought you looked absolutely adorable the way you were Yuto…. This is who you’re supposed to be…don't ever change that.” Yuya said as he gave Yuto a small pat on the head.
“Yuya can I-“
“Oh! Takaki-kun! We’re going to be closing early today! It seems we’ve got some huge wedding party that ran into an emergency and needs a stylist, they’re paying pretty well too!” The lady from the front came in and informed them.
“Oh! Well we’ll get out of your way then!” Takaki nodded as he helped Yuto out of the chair and the two boys walked outside.
“You look great Yuto! Haha I guess you have a bunch of things to do ne? Don't worry! Just giving me this one chance to Make you over…. Well okay….. kinda make you over, was all that I wanted!” Takaki giggled as he looked at Yuto now and gave him a hug and left with Yuto standing outside the styling studio, he stood there starstruck and unable to move until he realized the bright white mass coming towards him as a frantically rushing bride
“Maybe…. It isn’t Takaki-kun?”
---Inoo---
“Are you sure you wont fall asleep?” Inoo asked as he drove the two boys to the giant library on campus he had been spending a lot of time in lately.
“Un! I’m sure!”
“I still don't know why you’d want to come to an old library to study architecture with me? Is there something going on?” Kei asked worriedly as he parked into a spot between a tree and a rather large van.
“N-Nothing” Yuto shook his head as he got out.
“Are you sure?”
“I…. just wanted to spend some time with you….” Yuto said, those words began to sound more like an automated excuse now, but he looked as Inoo nodded his acceptance and held out his hand.
“C’mon, it’s this way some of the bricks on the stairs are a little loose, so don't trip okay?”
“Got it.” Yuto took his hand and the two walked up the stone stairs to the grandest looking library Yuto had ever laid eyes on.
They walked into the building with Inoo flashing his student ID card and the librarian nodded to them. Up to the third floor they went and immediately headed for the back to a small cluster of couches and tables set up for reading. Yuto watched as Kei moved one of the few rectangular tables over to the couch and set his things down on it.
“You can go get whatever books you want to read you know? And we’ll just sit here where its nice and quiet.” Inoo explained as he pulled out his list of books to read and went off the find them. Truth be told, Yuto didn't know the first thing about Architecture… nor did he know anything about where to find books about what he was feeling now.
“No books?” Inoo asked as he returned with a stack of old leather bound albums and a few modern looking ones atop those.
“I uh… didn't know what I wanted to read.” Yuto blushed feeling rather foolish.
“Well… you can look at this one with me… we’re supposed to look at some of the architectural marvels of the word and pick one to write a report about.” Inoo explained as he picked the topmost book off his stack and sat down on the couch, prompting for Yuto to sit next to him.
The pair thumbed through the book’s pictures, gasping at some of the incredible things people had thought of and brought to life.
“I like this one,” Inoo pointed to the building which had a room that would slide out and the glass depolarize to show the entire world around them.
“Uwa…. I think I’d be so scared if I were in there.” Yuto said as he cowered slightly at the thought.
“Haha… well don't worry… the tension in the glass is measured so tha… uh..” Inoo saw the puzzled look in Yuto’s eyes and stopped.
“I mean…. They calculated it…. So it wouldn't break.” He said in simpler terms.
“Ohh….” Yuto nodded his understanding. Somehow through the course of the hours, Yuto fell asleep, drifting slowly towards the darkness. And in what seemed to be a flicker of a second, he awoke again, finding himself to be resting on Inoo’s chest. Somehow he had ended up in the older boy’s arms, and he felt embarrassed as he saw Inoo’s arms moving from behind him, writing his paper while keeping him in his embrace. He wanted to move, to let the older boy know he was awake now… but somehow, this felt…. So secure… so safe…
He watched as Inoo’s head on his shoulder turned back and forth looking at the book before writing his neat letters on his notebook. Yuto even noticed the way Inoo would check to make sure that he wasn't bothering Yuto, when really it must have been the other way around. Before he knew it, Inoo’s report was written and he realized by looking at the clock, he had been “pretending” for over an hour now.
“Yuto?” Inoo asked as the taller boy snapped out of his trance
“O-Oh… s-sorry… Inoo-chan…”
“Ah… it’s okay… it felt nice to have someone with me… haha I’m usually here alone with all these dusty books. Yabu tried to come with me one time, but he got bored and ended up leaving… “ Kei chuckled.
“S-Sorry for making it hard on you to write…”
“Nah I enjoyed it, it was… nice.” Inoo smiled.
Now feeling a little guilty, Yuto came clean.
“I was…. awake for the last hour…I just.. didn't want to move… s-sorry..” Yuto bowed apologetically, and Inoo smiled.
“I knew.” Kei said as he tapped Yuto’s nose lightly. Again that feeling of warmth flared and disappeared again in Yuto’s heart and he asked himself again. Was this what he was looking for?
“Inoo chan, do you-“
“All guests in the Library, Attention all guests in the library, the library will be closing in five minutes, please bring any books you wish to check out to the front. Thank you.” The intercom chimed and Yuto felt cut off again as Inoo stood up.
“Well…. We better get going, unless you want to be locked in here.” Kei picked up all the books and went to put them back, leaving Yuto to put the desk back in its place before meeting him downstairs.
“I guess I should take you home ne?”
“N-No.. I uh… I have to see Hikaru-kun later. So.. uh.. could you take me to his house?” Yuto asked,
“Okay…. Well sure… but what business do you have with Hikaru?”
“N-Nothing! I just want to
“spend time with him..” Inoo joined as the two boys finished the sentence together.
“I get it…” The older boy smiled peacefully as Yuto blushed quietly to himself.
---Hikaru---
“Ahh! Mom! Yuto’s here!” Hikaru roared as he opened the door and threw his arms around Yuto happily. He saw Kei sitting outside in his car and gestured for him to come in too. Inoo shook his head and smiled as he waved for them to go ahead, and drove off.
“What’s up Yuto!?” Hikaru asked cheerfully as he ushered the younger boy into the living room.
“I think…. I should be asking that of you… shouldn’t I?” Yuto raised an eyebrow, and Hikaru frowned.
“I was just.. happy that you wanted to come over for dinner!”
“Okay boys… I set the food on the table… and your father and I will leave you two alone…” Hikaru’s mother smiled knowingly as she looked at the pair sitting on the couch.
“Mom…….” Hikaru whined as she shook her head and walked off into the bedroom.
“S-Sorry about that……” Hikaru blushed.
“I-It’s okay… Ja… shall we eat?”
Dinner was quite the event, there seemed to be an endless sea of plates each holding the most wonderful tasting food Yuto had ever tasted. He and Hikaru traded jokes and Yuto found himself forgetting his worries. He felt so light hearted as he listened to the older boy talk about a “funny story” he had just heard. Somewhere in between he managed to bring himself back to reality and he remembered the purpose of his visit. But maybe he had already found what he was looking for. With Hikaru, time seemed to move so fast, where as with Yabu, time stood still. They had both managed to make his world move with his heart. Beating slowly, beating quickly, it all came to him when he was with them….
“Yo, Yuto-chaaan, stop night-dreaming and eat your desert.” Hikaru waved his hand in front of the younger boy’s face and Yuto snapped to attention again.
“G-Gomen…”
The night concluded with Hikaru and Yuto sitting side by side, both wrapped in a soft silky blue blanket as they shared popcorn and watched some of the more interesting moments from last week’s Shuumatsu YY JUMPing. Somewhere along the way, Hikaru had drifted off to sleep, the day’s excitement had worn him out, not to mention all the filming he was having to do lately. Yuto let himself out, locking the door tightly behind him to keep himself from running back in to ask Hikaru the question that had been burning in his heart. Hikaru had been so happy to just spend time with him…. if that wasn’t love, what was?
Yuto sighed as his chances at fulfilling Rael’s challenge grew slimmer still, and all he could do was keep going. He picked up his phone and looked at the next number on his list….
---Daiki---
“Eh? Locked out of your house? Sure, you can come over. Will your parents be worried if they find out you didn't come home last night?” Daiki asked.
“Well… they may not even know, I’m supposed to leave early tomorrow morning for something.” Yuto explained, making things up now at a moment’s whim.
“Oh.. okay, well… I’ll be waiting.” The older boy hung up as Yuto walked the short few minutes between his and Hikaru’s house.
He arrived at the steps of Daiki’s house and smiled as he saw the familiar carving that Daiki had done during a Jr segment hanging proudly on the Arioka household’s door. Gently he tapped on it, and hearing the rustling of motion inside, he waited patiently until the door opened and his friend stood there with hands on hips, shaking his head.
“It’s cold outside! Why are you just wearing that? Get in here before you catch a cold…” Daiki pushed and nudged as he grabbed Yuto and instantly wrapped him up in a blanket.
“You’ve really got to stop forgetting your key….” Daiki lectured as he brought out a cup of warm tea for Yuto to drink.
“huh? O-Oh!” Yuto nodded, almost forgetting his excuse to be here. With a soft push of his hand, he buried the key in question deeper into his pocket and shivered as the warmth of the blanket made him realize how cold it really was outside.
“Yuto? Are you okay?” Daiki asked as he sat down next to the thinner boy, setting his own cup of tea down beside Yuto’s.
“I-I’m fine…”
“Don't lie to me Yuto…. What’s wrong?”
“I….I’m just thinking about a lot of things lately.” Yuto lied. He was thinking about only one thing… and it was becoming more and more complex the harder he tried to solve it.
“You know… if you ever need to talk to someone Yuto, I’m always here ne?” Daiki added a slight nudge.
“Yeah…”
The night was a quiet one, but strangely peaceful. Around Daiki, Yuto felt like such a baby, it was constantly being taken care of… the occasional hug from Daiki sent warmth through his body and he was sure he was blushing through the entire night.
“You should go to sleep Yuto, you look so tired… what have you been doing all day anyway?” Daiki asked as he pulled out blankets and gestured for Yuto to follow him up to the bedrooms.
“I’ve been.. just… hanging out with people..” Yuto said nonchalantly, following the shorter boy upstairs.
“Oh? Hm, better than me, I’ve just been reading all day….” Daiki sighed as he plopped the giant bundle of blankets on the bed.
“Do you want to sleep with me tonight or the guest room?” Daiki asked, putting his hands on his hips, a habit he had taken up as of late.
“W-Would… it be okay…. If I stayed with you?” Yuto was a little unsure of how Daiki would take this, but his tension relaxed when the older boy nodded and moved the bundle to his bedroom.
Setting it on the floor he pulled off the small blanket already on the bed and replaced it with the bigger one he had just pulled out.
“Hai! Okay.” Daiki nodded proudly as Yuto bowed shyly.
“O-Oh! I’m wearing my… day clothes… I.. uh… I don't want to get your bed dirty…” Yuto paused.
“Well… actually I think I have a pair of extra sleeping clothes that will fit you… they used to be my brother’s but… “ Daiki walked off without finishing his sentence, and in short order came back with a pair of neatly folded pants and a shirt. He laid them on the bed and smiled.
“Whil you’re changing… I’m going to go turn out the lights downstairs.” Though in reality, Yuto knew it was because he wanted to give him his privacy while changing. Somehow…. These clothes fit him, they were a little big, but just a little. Still Yuto found himself waiting as he heard the flicks of light switches downstairs and then the treads of footsteps coming up the stairs.
“Yuto.. are you okay? Really?” Daiki asked again.
“I’m fine…really…W-Why do you ask?” Yuto hoped this next sentence, would help him decide.
“I…. I’m just worried about you… you seem so worried about something. I’m always willing to lend an ear you know? Just… don't feel as if you’re all alone in something. Okay?” Daiki said, sitting on the bed.
“H-Hai…” The younger boy felt more confused than ever. Daiki was worried about him… he could sense all these things and understand his turbulent heart. Wasn’t this love as well?
The night came and Yuto’s restless heart beat ever faster as he laid down and felt Daiki’s arm around his waist. Here he felt safe, if not just for tonight….
But what would he do tomorrow…..?
