Not getting stuff done very quickly, but getting some stuff done...

Spinning: Managed to finish plying up the last of the stuff from the August Spunky Fiber Club shipment, just in time for the September stuff to arrive. I ended up with about 240 yards of worsted weight 2-ply that should self-stripe. The South African Fine wool is nice and soft, a ( Read more... )

I know I got a couple of things from her a while ago (possibly even 2 years?), but then she wasn't selling anything for a long time. It's only the last month or so that she's had stuff up again.

Yeah, I predrafted like crazy. First I'd take a length of the roving and pull it sideways (widening it) to try to break up the surface felting. Went along the whole piece back and forth until it felt sufficiently fluffy. Then I tugged both ends to get things moving, then did a quick drafting pass along the whole length. Then I went over it AGAIN, pulling it out to a finger's width. Wound that onto the wrist distaff and spun from it, and now and then I'd have to stop and do a bit of extra drafting on a stubborn bit.

I plied it back on itself, and the first hank lined up really nicely, with areas where one color hit itself, then a blended area, then the next color... The second hank, it became obvious after half an ounce that it was going to have no bits where the colors aligned, and a *lot* of the purple plied with the green, which I didn't like over a long stretch, so I unplied that bit and pulled about 20 yards off of one end so as to force better lining up. :-)

I'm working on mine now. I love that you got such great stripes. I hope mine comes out as nice as yours.

Thanks for the link to those mittens! Those are great!

Good luck with your mom and the cashmere. It sounds like a win-win situation, though. I have to lie to my family about fiber content. My friends, too. They all insist that wool is itchy, period. I'm slowly turning them around.

My MIL was like that, but then I introduced her to my Lorna's Laces socks, and so she's caved to at least a limited degree. I think she was traumatized by Catholic-school wool sweaters in her youth.

the turtle toys and the mittens are so cute! If you put something sparkly on the fish mittens, it would look even more like Rainbow fish.
