I just got e-mail saying one of the little kids P goes to school with (he's a couple of years older, but they were in preschool together the first year; he's got Down's syndrome) had some sort of accident with an treadmill and has burns over most of his body. I don't even want to think about how that might have happened ( Read more... )

I cannot even imagine how he could get that kind of damage from a treadmill.... it boggles my mind.

I am so sorry for the boy.

I'm wondering if "burns" are the friction burns variety.

We have a treadmill, and when my daughter was about five she got on it while it was moving. She was okay for a minute, but then fell and didn't fall OFF of it. The machine has a safety key, which is supposed to attach to your clothing and pop out to automatically turn off the machine in case such a thing happens. However, the clip attaching it to clothing broke, so it didn't jerk out of the machine. End result, the treadmill kept moving while she was lying on it. We ran to her and one of us turned it off while the other picked her up, She was there less than five seconds, but she still wound up with nasty red burn-like places in several spots on her little body. Why yes, we did all feel horrible.

Needless to say, she has never wanted to get on the moving treadmill again. In fact, we try not to use it while she's awake.

I imagine it's probably friction burns, too. There's a photo that was sent and he's got what looks like a bandage around his head and neck, though his face is untouched.

That sort of thing sounds so scary! Glad your daughter's OK except for treadmill fear.

I can understand that part... I just am amazed that it would cover so much of his body. Was he not wearing clothing, etc. I am not being judgemental.. I am just wondering

I am so sorry for your daughter. I know she avoids the treadmill now... I am glad she is basically ok.. even though she had to go through hell to get there.
