Black paint is not necessary. As long as there's no light in there in the first place, you don't have to worry about stopping it from bouncing off the walls. On the other hand, it looks cool. Which is why I want to switch from a yellow safe light to a red one, it's more traditional.

You can use a yellow safelight? That's crazy!
I'm glad black paint isn't a must, that would save some work.
