Charlie almost didn't see it coming.
He was busy fussing with the ungraded papers in his lap in the passenger seat of Billy's SUV and had only glanced up to get an idea of how much more time he had before Billy dropped him off at Cal Sci.
His cry of alarm was choked off in his throat in panic as a white sedan coming towards them crossed the centerline into their lane to come at them head on.
Helpless to do anything, Charlie felt himself slammed into his seatbelt as Billy turned the wheel hard to the right to try to get out of the way. The sedan, which had also corrected at the last second, sideswiped the SUV, ripping the side mirror off on Billy's side as it impacted. The sound of metal against metal screeched into the everyday air as the cars met and the paint was scraped off of both cars from front to back.
Once contact was broken the SUV veered off to the side of the road as Billy prepared to bring it to a controlled stop. The sound behind them somehow made Charlie's adrenaline react all over again. He whipped his head around to find the damaged car had head on collided with the car behind Billy's, a little hatchback. A second later a third car rear-ended the hatchback and all three cars exploded into flames, gasoline making a huge pyre that rose nearly twenty feet in the air.
Stunned, Charlie felt the car stop and heard Billy on his cell, calling for help. "Wait here!" Billy ordered, rushing from the vehicle. Charlie reached for him, but he was moving too fast. Charlie didn't want Billy anywhere near that fire, but he was Billy; he had to help any way he could.
Remembering he could help too, Charlie popped the hatch and went rummaging around in the back until he found Billy's collection of flares. He carried them over to Billy, who looked like he was about to protest until he saw what Charlie had in his hands and the determination on his face. "Set them up at the intersection to force people to turn off this road," he instructed. "I'm trying to clear a path for the fire trucks." Charlie nodded and ran off; he'd seen Don set up flares to divert traffic before so he knew what to do.
The smoke was making his eyes water and he couldn't help but cough even after he got past the fire. The flares were set up in a matter of minutes so he started waving people over to the side to clear the fast lane that Billy was also clearing closer to the accident. When the fire truck finally arrived, sirens blaring, they sped down the now open lane, getting to the fire quickly. Police officers showed up and started directing traffic officially so Charlie retreated to the side of the road, finally allowing himself to take some deep breaths and let his fight or flight response relax a little.
It was then that he saw Billy striding towards him, his face and his white t-shirt smudged with ash and smoke. He said nothing, he just walked right up to Charlie, took his face in his hands and kissed him like he thought he'd lost him. With a start, Charlie realized that was true: they could easily have been the head-on collision car if not for Billy's fast actions. The fear finally enveloped him and he gripped Billy's t-shirt tight in his fists as they kissed fiercely out of love and fear of loss.
"I thought..." Billy murmured, their lips brushing. "And I couldn't lose you... Just the thought..."
"Shh," Charlie shushed him, planting a tender kiss on his lover's freckled forehead. "I'm safe, we're safe, thanks to you. I know you'd never let anything happen to me." He buried his curly head in Billy's chest and let out a long breath, ready to put the event behind them, promising himself in his thoughts to remember this day and to never take their time together for granted.
