Alot of people believe (or want to believe) alot of weird things about nutrition. So in my quest to set the world straight on matters of nutrition (and not get all grumpy when they think of healthy eating), here is a quiz

Fact or Myth?

1. Calories eaten at night are more fattening.

2. Fasting helps rid the body of toxins.

3. Skipping breakfast helps ( Read more... )

I got three wrong I think. My biggest hang up is the eating late at night. It's true, though, calories eaten whenever still count as calories. But I try to avoid eating late at night, because it helps me avoid some stomach issues, and I actually sleep better, instead of sleeping while digesting food ( ... )

It is a fad to not eat breakfast. Down with the conformists!

I'm still not sure what to think of frozen and canned veggies, either. They don't taste as good, and they tend to have sodium added to preserve them. (More on that below.) Fresh vegetables are more fun to work with but also more expensive. The best fresh fruits or vegetables are straight from the garden. I go insane over fresh tomatoes.

Now the whole sodium thing. I don't react well to sodium, so I know I need to cut down. But a good definition of hell is a low sodium diet. We seem to "pickle" just about everything these days, only it's not quite to that extreme. But everything we buy is manipulated to last longer than it normally would, and it usually has quite a bit of sodium in it.

I worked with a client who was on a low sodium diet, and there was very little he could eat. He didn't even enjoy eating because everything was so bland. There are other spices besides salt, but they don't really come through in the food without the salt to bring out the taste.

I hate these stupid diets and 'break-through scientific research' that pops up every other day. It makes people hate nutrition even more.

I would hate to be on any kind of stupid diet. I cant even avoid milk, I cant imagine having to stay away from sodium. I dont want to imagine it. I hate that everything is manipulated. We try to 'improve' everything and it ends up just being worse. Heart disease is the number one killer in america, diet is a HUGE factor in heart health, but at least we are making dinner faster...
we can spend hours in the gym, or thousands of dollars on plastic surgery, but spending a little more time and money on food is out of the question, as long as we look good it doesnt matter whats going on on the inside at the moment or in years to come.

thanks for listening to my rants! i like listening to yours

about #1- is it true though that if you eat too soon before you go to bed that you body doesn't digest the food as well and that you don't get a good enough sleep? obviously there aren't more calories, it's the same food no matter what time of day you eat it, but i thought that because your body is trying to reast, but is instead being forced to digest food, that it could be less healthy for you. myth or no??????

it can cause indigestion and might make it harder for you to fall asleep (for the reason before and because your body is active (digesting)).

I agree with Coyla. Unless you havent eaten much that day, you shouldnt eat close to when you go to bed, cause you dont need the energy, you are just going to sleep. But if you havent eaten that much that day, DONT skip because you are just going to bed. Your body needs nutrients to run, so eat something nutrient dense (ratio of nutrients over total calories).
