I got on facebook the other day and in that list that tells you more than you would ever care to know about people's facebook activites, i saw that a friend of mine joined a group against the movie The Golden Compass. It was a christian group, of course. I guess the author is an athiest and in the final book of the series, the kids end up killing ( Read more... )

Slam! Its about time a good discussion post was added! You don't even understand how excited this post gets me.....*breath...

I want to see that movie so bad, but the whole conflict behind it puts a knot in my stomach.

Its funny because I think some Christians can really understand the writer's hateful approach to God. I mean, who doesn't get sick of acknowledging the fact that what we hate doing is what is totally expected of us?

I do think its our responsibilty to note the fact that they guy hates God and so has an agenda.

To add to the witnessing topic [puke]: we spend so much time waiting and getting frustrated because the world doesn't see things how we want them to see us.

Always a christian, always in doubt...Its sucks because we have to spend so much time seeking out the right way and learning the truth, as if we're going to find a different route of our own, so then WE can claim God.

Oh and didn't I tell you that I'm an actress?

that's fantastico! i love what you say....and yet i am not sure at all what you are talking about. (LOL). I am so glad to be part of a discusion and hear other peoples thoughts. Here it is- it is MY TURN- i really am retarded (laughs at self)! I do agree with Mr. Annonymous pants, in that we do need to pray, and complaining about this & that is really kind of gross. It is so easy to complain about people not like us, especially those within the Jesus realm, it is however, very very dangerous to do this. I have realised that i have wasted some blessed time and conversations with people i really look up to merely complaining about "them" or "the Church", or "they" (i know Chrissy, go ahead and slam me for the "'s....LOL ( ... )

again, to this i say

My critique is not without prayer, and it is not excluding myself. Its a thought of mine written down for those close to me to read, not a rant for the entire church to read. It is something I care alot about and something that I simotaneously struggle with myself.

my aim in writing this isn't to condemn the church, it is me sorting my thoughts out. i do not seperate myself from anything i said

i do thjnk there is danger in critiqing (not always though), but i dont think it has to do with my post

whoa there...LOL, i was thinking about what i posted to you and found that it sounds similar to what you said in the first place. If it sounds as if i have been teeter tottering back and forth my reply to that is simply- what i mention in both responses- It is not about condemning, we are called to serve. And further more, when i start complaining about the way people, christian or non-christian do things the more i start to dislike them and find it harder to serve them. That is one of my struggles, and so i find that protesting against a movie is merely a wast of time, it would be different if it were Hitler but it is a movie for crying out loud....LOL ( ... )

What Would Jesus Say to Mr. Anonymous?

Maybe that's the question we should be asking ourselves here.

Okay....so SOMEONE needs to organize a Live Journal discussion of this movie when we all get a chance to see it. I nominate Emily to start it off. You can include spoilers and everything, but make sure you note it in the post, so dumb people don't read it and get pissed off.

I agree very much with your point about it being someone's story. Books and movies are generally artistic expressions, whether of the writer's own thoughts and feelings, or what he has observed to be the thoughts&feelings of others (of course they aren't necessarily free of some ulterior agenda, but most of the time an agenda is involved anytime someone expresses their feelings anyway, kinda hard not to). If you (meaning any of us Christians) were, in place of watching a movie or reading a book, hearing the personal story of the author himself, would that be different? So Mr. Author of the book (I don't remember who it is, sorry) says to you "I hate God," I think very few of us (I hope) would reply, "WHAAAAT!!! THAT IS SO WRONG! HOW COULD YOU THINK THAT WAY?!!" Instead, wouldn't your response be to ask why? I wanted to see the movie before I knew anything about it because the trailer was interesting, and honestly, I only wanted to see it even more after all this "The Golden Compass is evil" stuff started going down, because I want to ( ... )

Man! This got fired up! :) lol.

I think Emily is talking about how it is so annoying that people, ANY people, can get fired up about movies.

I'm just saying that why is this even a major topic? Why was HP ever a major topic? Why do christians (I say christians only because it is ALWAYS christians that get up in arms about fantasty movies/stories) get riled up over stories!?!?!??

It is annnnnooyyiiinngg.

It just makes christians look like complete idiots and I'm sick of it.

We are self-fulfilling prophecies. Christians freaked out so much about Harry Potter...then what happens? The writer pulls out the gay-card and knocks us on our butts. Tells the world that "Now the christians will have something to talk about"

Nice.

The idiots have such a loud voice that it makes us all look stupid. Can't we just simply be viewed like everyone else? That we just like a good story?

I would love a discussion about this movie once we see it! SOunds fun!

i personally would only go see this movie cause polar bears fight in it... i'm not a fan of movies that involve kids being close to being if not is the main character of the movie. i normally don't watch movies other than being entertained. i normally don't give a shit if they kill God. it's a freaking fantasy!!! who cares?! just like when a church protested The Divinci Code. soooo stupid. it's fiction. how is protesting that going to show christ's love or further the kingdom of heaven? so yes! more power to ya emily!
