An excellent read

Rebecca West's "The Fountain Overflows" ((c)1957) turned out to be a very odd book. Precocious, not dreadfully nice child narrator who reminded me of Flavia de Luce but oh! so much better. She does not appear in this excerpt, however:

After three months of truly tedious effort to look over all of the books on the "general" fiction shelves at Third Place Books in an attempt to feel broadminded -- in search of something, anything, that might entertain me -- and coming away with a grand total of 3 that I actually read all the way through, 2 of which were flawed in one way or another, I've given up and am going back to mysteries. But thanks for thinking of me!

Well, I tried. I really do think the characters might appeal to you and the story is, for the most part, pretty amusing but if you can resist the quoted passage maybe it's not for you after all. -em.
