The latest mystery bird off the Fill

It being Eli's birthday, I cut out of work early and biked/bussed to meet him at his office so we could both skedaddle over to the Waterfront Activity Center and enjoy some time on the water in a canoe on a blazingly hot day. I looked at the photo before reading the paragraph below, and immediately thought, "Solitary Sandpiper" and I'm good with that as an ID. They are uncommon -- the last one I personally know of there was from May 2013. I don't think Connie has it yet on her 2014 year list, so I'll let her know.

But...your reading report is incomplete! What about the birds of East Africa? Do I owe you $6.30?

Yes, Eli is really a naturally with this birding thing--far more than I am. He's also good at noticing that what looks like the same old sparrow is actually something different based on its flight or other movements. I am, of course, thrilled at the idea of having the first solitary sandpiper of the year at the Fill if such turns out to be the case. The advantage of being *on* the water, I suspect.

Your $6.30 is safe; I enjoyed The Birds of East Africa. (After the previous two books my bar was pretty low, of course.) -em.
