"Have a nice day!"
She thanked the shopgirl with radiant smile, walked out of the shop and into a busy 40th Street at lunch hour, stuffing the small package in her bag, and crossed the street, reaching Bryant Park on a beautiful, warm mid-fall day, red leaves twirling to the ground among New Yorkers sitting at the small tables with their salads and iPads.
She sat down for a minute on a chair in the middle of the lawn, staring at her surroundings. The city looked even more beautful than usual today, the people happier, the sounds of traffic almost like music. Or maybe it was that she could hardly contain her feelings.
Fishing her phone out of her purse, she pressed "one" and waited to be connected.
"Hello?"
"Hey. It's me."
"Hey, baby, how's it going?" She could almost hear his smile.
"Good! I was wondering if you were on your way home. I'm on 42nd, in Bryant Park."
"Oh, not quite yet. I'll be there in about an hour or so. Sorry..."
Perfect. "Oh, don't worry. I'll run a couple more errands. See you later."
"Later. I love you."
She grinned. "Love you more."
Stowing her phone away, she stole another glance at the small package in her handbag, and then got up, setting off to their new, bigger apartment they had just finished furnishing and decorating the previous month, right on time for them to celebrate their first wedding anniversary in the city.

She took a step back to see if the flowers in the entrance hall were centered on the table, and then, satisfied with her work, set off for a quick shower and a change of dress. A few minutes later, she was stepping out in a towel, and slipping on a yellow short-sleeved dress, one she knew he loved on her. The diamond on her engagement ring reflected the yellow light, casting a few sparkles on the wall, as she checked the time once more, and then sat down on the couch, lost in her daydreams.
The sound of keys in the entrance door shook her from her musings, and she got up, her heart beating out of her chest.
He greeted her with a huge smile, as she threw her arms around his neck. "Hi, my beautiful wife."
She cupped his cheek. "Hi, my silly husband. Good day?"
He nodded, "Good day," and kissed her lips. "Better day now."
She felt her head spinning, knowing his day was about to become even better, and gripped his shoulders tightly. "Good. I'm glad."
"Was your day as nice, my love?"
She stretched her acting skills, trying not to give herself away too quickly. "Umh, yeah. It was alright. I got you something."
He grinned dorkily. "Oh really? Was I that good?"
"Maybe." She led him to the couch . "Be back in a minute."
Her heart was beating solidly against her eardrums as she walked to their bedroom and back, clutching the package, and then laid it in his lap. "Here," she whispered.
His fingers traced the small blue-and-orange writings on the wrap paper, and he raised an eyebrow at her. "Mets? You've been to the Mets store?"
She nodded. "Yep, I was right on 40th and Fifth for lunch." Her breathing was becoming erratic, and she hinted at his lap. "Open it."
Smiling, he looked down, a focused expression, the tip of his tongue caught between his teeth, as he carefully tore the paper open.
His fingers slowly moved apart the paper, and his eyes widened when he saw some blue fabric with the "Mets" logo all over it. He couldn't understand, was it a bandana? Or a handkerchief? But there was a little white button there, then what... He raised his gaze, to meet hers, and noticed her eyes filled with tears
His index fingers hooked on the sides of the fabric, and as he lifted it in front of him, he suddenly realized what he was holding.
His mouth was wide open as the cutest little Mets onesie for an infant was right in front of him, and it took him a few seconds to force his gaze from that to his wife's smiling face, streaked with tears on her cheeks.
"Jay... Is this... Are you..."
She could just nod her head decisevely as a happy sigh escaped his lips and he wrapped her in a tight embrace. "Are you serious?" He was just whispering, as his biggest dream was shaping up right in front of him, and he was too afraid it might disappear for the smallest thing, like a voice tone raised too much.
She nodded on his neck, her tears wetting the collar of his shirt. "Yes." She pulled back a little, and stared in his eyes. "I took 3 tests to be sure. All positive."
The smile he gave her was one she had never seen on him, a love so powerful he was almost having troubles dealing with it, as if it was taking up and consuming his whole body.
He couldn't utter a single word, as he took her face in his hands, rubbing his thumbs on her cheekbones, extremely gently, and then kissed her as deeply and thoroughly as he was capable of, trying to convey all the love and happiness and overwhelming feelings in that small action, knowing all too well how that was impossible.
A single small sob escaped her mouth as he took a breath between kisses, and he stopped to look at her, kissing the tip of her nose.
"We're having a baby."
She gave a shaky laugh, tears still falling profusely. "We are."
"I love you more than I will ever be able to put into words."
She caressed his cheek. "My sweet boy is going to be a daddy!" Her heart soared from the way his eyes lit up. "Are you happy?"
He stood up, and pulled her up in his arms, holding on tight and spinning her around gently. "Happy doesn't even begin to cover it." He looked at her face for a second. "Are you alright? Any nausea? Tiredness? Anything you need, my love. Anything.
"I'm good. I've never been better than right at this moment. But thank you. I love you."
He let her down with extreme care, as if he was handling the most precious thing in the world, and he probably was, and then knelt down in front of her. His right hands moved towards her stomach, but then he stopped midway, and looked at her, asking for permission.
She nodded, tears forming again. "Go ahead."
Slowly, the fingertips of his right hand were laid on the yellow fabric covering her belly, and he got closer.
"Hi." He was barely whispering, but it was loud and clear to her. "Hi, baby. My name is Matt. I'm your daddy." He chuckled, tears interfering with his words. "I'm daddy." Both his hands moved to fully hold her still flat stomach. "I love you so much." He kissed the silky fabric, as she sneaked a hand in his curls, cuddling softly. "And you're so lucky, because you're gonna have the best mom in the world..."
She was openly crying at his words, as he kissed their baby once more, and laid his ear on her.
She smiled knowingly. "I don't think there's gonna be noises from there for a while yet."
He nodded. "Oh, I know. But I want him or her to know. I'm here. Always."
They spent a long time like that, Matt knelt in front of her, his lips or ear on her belly, Jayma's hands in his hair, sharing tears and smiles and hopes and dreams. After a while, she spoke.
"I've called my OB/GYN and she has a free appointment today at five, but I wasn't sure if you were busy."
He looked up at her. "Are you kidding me? There's nothing- nothing- that could keep me from seeing our baby for the first time!! Definitely confirm the appointment."
She giggled and looked for her phone in her purse, as he held up the onesie in front of him. He was gonna be a dad. With Jayma. They were going to have a baby together.
He swiftly ran the back of his hand on his eyes, as he heard her happily chat on her phone with her doctor. It was definitely going to be a better day.

As you may have guessed, the short stories won't follow a chronological order. Hope you enjoyed this little one! I'm not sure yet how many chapters it's going to be, but not very long.
As usual, I'd love to hear from you. Even a short review makes a lot of difference to me. :)
