"...Dammit!" He kicked a small stone laying innocently in the lawn, walking aimlessly around the garden. He had just got home from the lot, and he guessed she was waiting for him inside. He just had to... calm down a bit before getting in.
He smirked bitterly to himself. She wouldn't have liked to see him like that. At all. And for what, now? Nothing. At all. Just because he had kissed her... not one but lots of times, on the cheek, sure, but still. In front of everybody. He had taken so long they hadn't been able to pose for a couple of shots themselves. The real couple. And the way she was always telling everybody how she used to have the biggest crush on him...
And sure, they were friends. Of course. Everybody in the Broadway circle knew each other, and they'd met a few times before. And he knew he wasn't really aiming at his woman... He couldn't help but chuckle. My woman? When did I become a Neanderthal? Just go inside and club her on the head, will ya?
"Matt?" Pacing in circles, deep in thoughts, he hadn't heard her approaching. "What are you doing here? Is something wrong?" It was windy, even a bit chilly for a September night in LA, and she shivered lightly.
He looked at her for a moment before taking off his dark green jacket, landing it on her shoulders. "Hey."
"Hey." She searched his eyes. "Are you ok? I looked out of the window and saw your car but you were nowhere to be found... and then I see you kicking at the grass..."
He gave her a soft look. "I'm okay. Let's get inside, you're cold."
She hesitated for a moment, but then took his hand and led the way back inside. She had just stepped through the door when she felt a strong pair of arms circling her waist. She melted to his touch, as he dived on her neck, his five o' clock shadow tickling her lightly. His touch was not the one she knew, his arms were tighter than usual around her, his kisses longer and deeper on her skin. She broke away a little when she felt him sucking lightly. "Baby. Hey." She turned around. "No hickeys... it takes a lifetime to cover them and you can still see them in some shots." She held out a hand.
"I've made us some dinner. You hungry?" He was silent for a moment, but then nodded and followed her in the kitchen, silently.
-------
She couldn't help but wonder what the heck was going on. He had been touchy-feely- much more than he already was- throughout dinner, and now that she had sat down on the sofa with a book, he hadn't taken out his lines as he often did in their evenings at home, but had just pulled her to him, shifting so he was completely wrapped up around her, without a word, occasionally caressing her hair or laying a kiss on her shoulder.
The cuddles weren't unusual- they both enjoyed their quiet time together, and had spent more than one night just laying beside each other, each with their own book, her head on his chest, one of his hands in her hair. So, what was different? He's worried... he's clinging to me. She felt a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. Had her plan worked too much?
-------
She had just planned to tease him a bit. Much committed as he was, he liked to joke and flirt all the time, and she had just wanted to pay him back a little bit. As a joke. So she had greeted John as "her first big crush" the first time he'd come on set, and had definitely been cheery and flirty. In a cute, joking way. Never losing sight of her real boyfriend... who had been looking at the exchanges without commenting. But Stamos... he had taken it a bit too seriously... and had actively taken Matt's place with her on the red carpet of the Glee premiere.
She had flirted a little, stating more than once that he'd been one of her first crushes... but then the photographers had gone completely mad about the two of them, and Stamos had played on it, kissing her cheek a thousand times, as she stood there, really uneasy, noticing Matt in the background, a dark look on his face. She gave him a cheeky grin.
We're just playing, Matty, so what? He had played on it, fake-punching his on-screen rival while posing for pictures. And she thought that had been it.
But today... she sighed lightly and felt his hold tighten a bit. They had shot the first Will/Emma/Carl scene. They hadn't seen John in a few days, and today Carl and Emma were supposed to kiss. On-screen kisses had never been a big deal for her, it was like any other scene. But there was something different in knowing her boyfriend was there actually watching them... no, actually, he was there in the scene...
And when they'd had to reshoot it several times, she was the one getting uncomfortable. Stamos had been great, joking and keeping the mood light between takes. But somehow, she felt uneasy around him... as if he really were trying to kiss her, and not just for their scene. He was just being a flirt, like she knew he was, but she just couldn't wait for the scene to be over. She smirked bitterly thinking she was the one who had started it all... Had she managed to make him unsure of them? Worried, even? Was that the reason why he hadn't left her side for almost three hours straight?
She got up, and he unwillingly let go. "Okay, I think I'm going to bed..."
"Can I come?"
She stared at him, wide-eyed. "Can you come? To bed? Are you asking me if you can come to our bed?" She remarked forcefully that small word, "our".
He looked at her for a long moment with sad eyes, then took a deep breath and got up. "It's not that I don't trust you." He was pacing around the coffee table, his hands in the air. "Because I do. I completely do. But... I don't. Trust. Him."
She tried to reach out but he was pacing again, not even noticing her. "He's just... kind of a dog, ya know? And I just don't like seeing him around you all the time..." He turned to her. "I know what you're gonna say now, you're a smart woman and you know how to deal with that kind of stuff and I should just back the hell off and you're right-" he was rambling now "-and I'm behaving like a caveman and I should just club you on the head and take you to my cave and I'm sorry, but..." He turned his head as he heard her stifled giggle. "...Jay?"
She couldn't hold it anymore, and burst loudly into laughter. "Club me on the head?" She sat down on the edge of the couch, her hands on her stomach. "What's gotten into you?" He knelt down in front of her, laughing lightly as he could not hold it togehter while she was cracking up.
"Okay, that may have come out slightly wrong..."
Her laughs subdued to giggles after a few minutes, and she cupped his face with a hand. "Are you seriously jealous of John?"
He scoffed and mumbled something incomprehensible, staring at her knees. "What did you say?"
"I'm not jealous jealous. You know. And I'm never gonna tell you what to do... I'm not really a caveman."
She caressed his cheek. "No, you're not."
"But I just... does it sound really bad if I tell you you're mine? Not as 'I own you'. Just the same as... I'm yours. You know?"
She pulled his face closer and kissed him lightly. "I know." She kissed him again, then looked at him with a cheeky look. "Do you remember the kiss in front of a million people last month?" He nodded slowly. "Do you remember what I told you after?"
He mouthed soundlessly the word "payback", a question in his eyes. She smirked, raising an eyebrow. "Well... maybe I decided to keep my word..."
Before she could even realize it, he had jumped up and was tickling her sides mercilessly, as she twisted on the couch, effectively pinned with no chance of escape, laughing so hard she had tears in her eyes. "Smart, very, very smart..." he tickled her some more. "I guess I'm allowed to my caveman moment then..." and with that, he lifted her fireman-style on his shoulder, running up the stairs two steps at a time.
