Sugar fiend.

I think I have a bit of a problem with sugar. As in, often, I can't stop thinking about it until I've eaten so much of it that I feel light headed and sick. I think I'm going to try and cut back, and every time I have a craving for it, take Lady out for a walk. I've also definitely noticed that I've been putting on weight gradually. I'm trying ( Read more... )

I feel your pain in relation to the sugar addiction - my dad worked at Mars for 21 years which really didn't do me any favours and has now left me with a tendency to get hypoglycaemic which isn't pleasant. Still, whenever I'm following my eating plan properly I feel fine - hungry when I'm supposed to and not craving anything too silly, but when I'm tired and not eating properly (or exercising either) and can't be bothered to cook, I really suffer and want to eat all sorts of shite.

Yup, sugar and bread are my downfalls! My word, if I had a parent who worked for Mars, that would have been the end of me in my pregan days!!

It was great at the time, but looking back I'm sure it hasn't done me any favours - my metabolism has never been good and I'm sure it was probably made worse by my awful diet of far too much chocolate!

I don't want to use the "GI" words but, rather than cutting sugar cold (ARGH NIGHTMARE THINK OF DOING THAT WITH COFFEE!) have you thought about going for more "natural slow release" sugars? One thing I do if I have an intolerable sugar craving is stick half a spoon of it in a cup of tea. Ok, it's still sugar but it's better than chompfing down on cake or something.

Oh hell no, I couldn't give up sugar cold turkey! I wasn't even entertaining that idea; I know my limits and doing things in a faddish way spells disaster for me. But yup, sugared tea is one way I ease the cravings now. Trouble is, I never used to have any sugar in my tea (apart from when I first started drinking it and I had 3!), but now it tastes weird with none, so tea with sugar is now the norm. I'm just trying to figure out ways to keep myself on more of a level, rather than WEEEEEEE I LOVE CAKE to UGHHHH I FEEL SO SLEEPY and back to WEEEEEEE again. Keeping my tummy full is one way to do that, so I'm trying to eat filling meals, less bread, and less sugary snacks. I'll probably get some agave over the weekend because although it's definitely not a "miracle" food as has been claimed, it's still better than refined sugar.

Phew, but then you're not an idiot so yeah. :D Sugar in tea does taste so wrong, so, so wrong but it helps. How about switching back to sweetened soy milk? or a tasty flavoured one? I love agave, I could drink it from the bottle. It's SO good on porridge, with chopped nuts, dried fruit and cinnamon.

it's a shame veganism doesn't "allow" honey because that is the ultimate easy, tasty healthy cheat too.

Ah, agave is pretty good instead of honey. In fact I know that in England at least, there's a honey substitute that actually tastes like honey. Godddd, honey is so delicious. Honey honey honey...

It's not the same though. Honey was one of the deciding factors in me staying strict vegetarian rather than vegan. It's another thing to the list of things to be when I grow up - bee keeper.

I definitely miss having lazy days where I was free to do whatever I wanted, especially when the weather is lovely!!

Oh sugar. I haven't had any for over 2 weeks because the Chinese doctor told me not to. As long as someone else says I have to...

Would you consider writing down all you eat and then classifying foods into sugary ones to see how many you eat in a day?

I find that I have to go off sugar to regulate it... otherwise it won't happen. Then I can slowly introduce it, and eventually it gets bad again and I have to go off again. However, I find I only go off of it if someone tells me I have to.
